Construction history
After the opening of Shanghai port, the bishop of Anglican Church of the United States Peng en (Wen Huikang) built a floating bridge to the west of the ferry.
In 1873, the floating bridge was changed into a wooden bridge, which was called PengEn bridge by foreigners, touferry bridge by Chinese, or Baidu bridge. To distinguish the east from the outer white bridge, it is also known as the two white bridge.
In 1927, the wooden bridge was demolished and rebuilt into a reinforced concrete bridge, named after Zhapu road.
Bridge condition
Zhapu road bridge is 71.94 meters long and 17.3 meters wide, including 12.9 meters of roadway and 2.2 meters of sidewalks on both sides. The bridge deck is 1244.5 square meters in total.
The upper part is reinforced concrete cantilever beam, and the lower part is gravity abutment and hollow pier with wooden pile foundation. Heavy vehicles are divided into 1-10 levels, and extra heavy vehicles cannot pass. There are three holes under the bridge and one hole in the middle, with a span of 36.55 meters. The net navigable width is 35 meters, the middle elevation of the beam bottom is 6.12 meters, and the elevation of both sides is 5.85 meters. Except for the extra spring tide, the barge can navigate under the bridge at other times.
The average slope of the south end of the bridge is 3.427%, and the local maximum slope is 4.14%, forming a bend, and its fork is Yuanmingyuan Road, close to the bridge. There is no bus passing through this bridge, and the traffic of other motor vehicles was not large in the early days. In recent years, with the rapid increase of traffic flow and overload, the bridge pier and main beam are exposed to cracks. After reinforcement and repair, only vehicles of less than two tons are allowed to pass.
