Wuye temple, also known as Wanfo Pavilion, is a Dragon King Temple, located in the Wanfo Pavilion of Taihuai Town, Wutai Mountain. Founded in the Ming Dynasty, Wanfo Pavilion is composed of Manjusri hall, wulongwang hall and ancient stage. Among the numerous temples in Wutai Mountain, Wuye temple is a small one, but it is one of the most popular temples in Wutai Mountain and one of the most famous temples.
Generally, Buddhist temples do not provide for Dragon King. Why should the Dragon King hall be built in Wutai Mountain. It is said that a long time ago, Mount Wutai was not a cool place, but a hot place. The local people suffered a lot from it. The great wisdom Manjusri Bodhisattva, who was dedicated to solving people's difficulties, skillfully borrowed a cool stone from the Dragon King of the East China Sea. From then on, Mount Wutai became cool and pleasant, with smooth weather and became a summer resort. This cool gem was originally used by the five sons of the Dragon King. When they found that the cool gem was brought to Mount Wutai by Manjusri Bodhisattva, they followed it and made a big noise in Mount Wutai, cutting five steep peaks into five platforms to recover the cool stone. But Manjusri, after all, had boundless power. He soon subdued the Five Little Dragon Kings and let them live on the top of the five platforms. The Five Dragon King was placed in the highest north station, which was in charge of the cultivation of clouds and rain in Wutai Mountain.
Wuye temple is the most famous and popular in Wutai Mountain. On the first and the fifteenth day of the lunar new year, there is an endless stream of worshippers, including praying for rain, singing opera and going to the market. It is said that Wuye temple is very spiritual in making vows, so this is the place where Mount Wutai enjoys the most incense.
Wuye Temple
Wuye temple, also known as wulongwang hall, is built from north to south. Wuye temple was founded in the Qing Dynasty. When it was rebuilt in the Republic of China, an extra vestibule was added.
In addition to offering money to the fifth Dragon King, there are also statues of the elder, the second, the mother, the third and the rain behind him.
Brief introduction to temples
The wulongwang Hall of Wuye temple in Shanxi Province was originally built with a rolling shed roof. When it was rebuilt in 1917, it was changed into a single eaves resting on the top of the mountain, with four corridors, five spines and six beasts. There is a copper temple on the main ridge. In front of it, there are rolling shed buildings, carved beams and painted buildings.
According to folklore, the fifth master was originally a black face, but Manjusri became the Five Dragon King in order to help all living beings, so the black face became a golden face. Manjusri Bodhisattva became the Five Dragon King, who liked to watch operas very much, so an ancient stage was built opposite the Five Dragon King Hall to perform for the fifth master.
Ancient and modern humanities
Because of this, up to now, during the Dharma Assembly in June in Wutai Mountain, famous actors and dramas have to be arranged to perform in the Wanfo Pavilion, which means singing to the Five Dragon King.
The fifth Lord worshipped in the temple is the honorific name of Manjusri Bodhisattva, the Dragon King of Guangji, and also the incarnation of Manjusri Bodhisattva on the top of Wutai Mountain. Therefore, it is the most fragrant temple in Wutai Mountain. In fact, it should be said that the fifth Lord is actually the product of the localization and secularization of Manjusri Bodhisattva in Taiwan. It undertakes the function of folk God and reposes the local people's wishes for good weather, peace and auspiciousness.
Perhaps it is because the fifth master is closer to the masses than the solemn Bodhisattvas in other major temples, and more in line with the wishes of all living beings who are eager for quick success and instant benefit. In the eyes of good men and women, the small fifth master temple has almost become a symbol of responding to every request. Most people who go to Mount Wutai to burn incense go to the fifth master temple.
Local impact
In the eyes of the masses, they don't know anything about Buddhism or even Manjusri Bodhisattva. However, as long as the Wuye temple is mentioned, it is well-known far and wide and has almost become a business card of Mount Wutai.
Related allusions
Most Buddhist temples are not for the Dragon King, but why build the Dragon King Temple in Wutai Mountain? Long ago, Wutai Mountain was not a cool and beautiful place, but a hot and miserable place. The local people were deeply affected by it. The great wisdom Manjusri Bodhisattva skillfully borrowed a cool stone from the Dragon King of the East China Sea. From then on, Wutai Mountain became a cool and pleasant place with smooth weather and became a summer resort. This cool gem was originally used by the five sons of the Dragon King. When they found that the cool gem was brought to Mount Wutai by Manjusri Bodhisattva, they followed it and made a big noise in Mount Wutai, cutting five steep peaks into five platforms to recover the cool stone.
But Manjusri soon subdued them and let them live on the top of five platforms. Wulongwang was placed in the highest north station, which was in charge of the cultivation of clouds and sowing of rain in Wutai Mountain. People appreciated him for the benefit of Wutai Mountain Area and built a temple for him.
Layout structure
Wuye temple, also known as Wanfo Pavilion, is located in Taihuai Town, adjacent to Dabai pagoda, which is another way to Xiantong temple. The temple has a broad terrain. At that time, it was the palace where the emperors of the Qing Dynasty had a banquet on the stage, commonly known as the "imperial city". From the "imperial city" to the Ten Thousand Buddhas Pavilion, there are many Xisheng tourists all the year round.
Architectural style
Architectural features: the Wanfo Pavilion covers an area of more than 20000 square meters. The whole courtyard is composed of Manjusri hall, Wuye hall, stage and monk's house. It is in the shape of four orders.
The ancient pines in the temple are hidden, and the cigarettes are in the hall. Looking at the architectural pattern, we can see that the layout here is very unique. The main hall of Manjusri, which has a two-story appearance, faces east and West, while the peibangze, which is commonly known as "Wuye Temple", faces north and south, and there is a stage just to the south. According to historical records, the Wanfo pavilion was first built in the 44th year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty. The earliest building is Manjusri hall. The construction technique is three eaves and four corridors. It is on the top of the mountain. There are 10000 Buddha statues of the same size inside, so it is called the Wanfo Pavilion.
The upper level is dedicated to the Bodhisattva of the Tibetan king and the father and son of Min Gong, and a bronze bell with a weight of 7000 kg is hung; the lower level is dedicated to the three statues of Manjusri, Puxian and Guanyin, which are made in the Ming Dynasty, with vivid modeling.
Prosperous scene
Solemn and fragrant, Emperor Xuanye couldn't help thinking of the prosperity of the Qing Dynasty. On the way back, he had a pleasant conversation with his entourage. Right now. Suddenly a gust of wind blows, and suddenly the sky and the earth are dark. The sand and stones make a "clapping" sound, and the bearers of the sedan chair immediately lose their way.
Emperor Xuanye was also a little nervous. He lifted up the curtain of the sedan chair to have a look, but he saw that he was in a daze, and the sand was rushing towards him. In his eagerness, he closed his eyes. In a trance, a man with a black face and a strong body stood before the meeting. He asked aloud, "what's the matter with my lord?" Xuanye replied, "I've finished my pilgrimage to Zhongtai temple. I'm about to return, but I'm lost in the strong wind."
Folklore
The black faced man said, "my Lord, don't worry. Buddha and minister will drive back to the palace immediately." When Emperor Xuanye opened his eyes, the man disappeared, but a bright light appeared in front of him, as if someone had lit a lamp in the dark. The sedan chair bearer followed the light and went back to the Imperial Palace smoothly. When he woke up the next morning, Emperor Kangxi naturally remembered that he had lost his way to Taiwan yesterday. He also remembered the black faced man who had rescued him and brought him back to the palace. He told the monk president who accompanied him to ask if there was a black faced monk in Wutai Mountain Temple. After thinking about it for a long time, the monk president didn't think that there was such a monk in any temple.
After breakfast, Emperor Kangxi walked out of the palace and came to the Ten Thousand Buddhas Pavilion. He went up to the Five Dragon King Hall and looked up. The black faced gold statue worshipped in the middle was exactly the same as the one he saw yesterday.
He was very excited, and immediately said, "you are the one who saved you from danger. I have made you Dragon King Bodhisattva." At the end of the speech, he was also given a semi assistant driver to show his dignity. Later, the legend spread and the fruit position of Dragon King Bodhisattva was determined. The stage of Wuye temple was built in the Qing Dynasty. It's also a legend. It's said that at the turn of summer and autumn, suddenly one day, a troupe of troupes came up near the Imperial City, playing drums together. But the villagers and the monks in the temple didn't go out to invite the troupe. Why did they start singing? Someone went to ask the troupe leader.
The head teacher said: a few days ago. One of your black faced masters from the Ten Thousand Buddhas Pavilion came to our troupe to write a play and narrate the details. After listening to this, people suspected that it was the Lord's business, but they were not sure. This night, the abbot of the Wanfo Pavilion had a dream. He dreamed that the fifth master came into the squatter room to talk to him and said to him: a few days ago, I made a special trip to Fanshi to write the drama of Zhaozhuang opera company and ordered the repertoire. The time was three days. The price of the drama was also listed and hidden in my sleeve.
When he awoke from his dream, the old monk was very surprised. He quickly opened the door of the hall and went to the statue of the fifth master. After burning incense and kowtowing, he lifted the left sleeve of his robe and found that there was a yellow paper list in it, which said the number of days and the price of the opera.
According to the legend, a unique and elegant stage was built opposite the fifth master Hall of the ten thousand Buddha Pavilion. Historically, opera has been performed here every June of the lunar calendar, because the fifth master loves to see opera. The Dragon King Bodhisattva's stories of punishing evil and promoting good, saving people from fire and water, and responding to every request are even more numerous.
Therefore, many people come here to make a pilgrimage. Walking into the Ten Thousand Buddhas Pavilion, it seems that there is a warm scene of ancestors praying devoutly, and there are many styles of banners and plaques hanging by modern people. Among the Pilgrims and vowers, all kinds of faces and costumes contain all kinds of mentality, including those with the cup of fate and those who are complacent: they rush here with their own purposes, and all their arrogance has been temporarily restrained. Even the wrongdoers seem to have recovered their humanity and awakened their conscience. Traditionally, there are no more than three wishes when making a wish in Wuye temple, but as long as the wish is corresponding to Buddha and Bodhisattva, there are many
