Pan Chuan Pu Catholic Church

Fanchuanpu Catholic Church, a provincial cultural relic protection unit in Fujian Province, was built in 1864 and rebuilt in 1933. It covers an area of 8400 square meters and a building area of 1253.7 square meters. It is a Gothic building. At the north end of the main hall, there is a bell tower more than 20 meters high, on the top of which stands a cross nearly 3 meters high. In the past, the bell tower was known as the "No.1 hall in the south of the Yangtze River". It is still the largest Catholic Church in Fujian and the general Catholic Church in Fujian and Fuzhou.

Pan Chuan Pu Catholic Church, located in Nantai Island, Cangshan District, Fuzhou City, is a provincial cultural relics protection unit in Fujian Province. Human history

Pan Chuan Pu has a famous church, which is called pan Chuan Pu Catholic Church. It is located in the north of Xinmin Street in fanchuanpu and the east of Customs lane. It was built in 1864. According to the local chronicles of Fuzhou, in 1625, the Prime Minister Ye Xianggao returned to his hometown. When he passed by Hangzhou, he met the Italian missionary AI Julius at Yang Tingyun's house. They went to Fujian together. He preached in Fuzhou and built a hall in Gongxiang, named Sanshan hall, which was the earliest Catholic Church in Fuzhou.

During his 23 years of missionary work in Fujian Province, he built 22 holy churches. During the 80 years from 1848 to 1936, the most prosperous schools in Fuzhou were fanchuanpu Catholic Church, Ximen Sanguan church, Cangshan lequnlu chapel and Shangdu Catholic Church. These churches were the first to rent houses or rebuild them with old houses. Although they retained the appearance of the original buildings, their interior decoration was westernized. The pan Chuan Pu Catholic Church, which was completed in 1933, and the Huaxiang Shangyou hall, which was completed in 1938, are completely Western-style buildings.

During the period from Kangxi to Daoguang, the Qing government banned religion, the governor of Fujian and Zhejiang expelled foreign Catholic missionaries, and the Gongxiang Catholic Church was banned, confiscated and changed into Guandi temple. After Fuzhou became a trading port, missionaries came one after another to resume missionary work. In the third year of Tongzhi, the church property confiscated in the past was returned, and the General Administration of Commerce of Fujian Province replaced the original Catholic Church in Gongxiang with the pan boat Pu min Tian.

Most of the middle ages and modern architects came from Europe. The architectural styles of Byzantine, Gothic and Baroque came to Fuzhou with the invasion of European countries in the world.

The church clock tower is 20 meters high, and the cross on it is more than 3 meters high. The clock can be heard ten miles away. The cross shaped hall is 60.2 meters long and 19.5 meters wide, covering an area of 1371.4 square meters, and can accommodate more than 2000 people.

In 2008, due to the need of road construction, the priest building of fanchuanpu church had to be relocated. Considering that it is a cultural relic, the relevant authorities chose the way of overall translation to move the building. On October 6, after more than a month's translation of 80.7 meters, the building safely arrived at the designated position of rotation, and began to rotate 90 degrees counter clockwise "turn", from the original east-west direction to the north-south direction, and finally parallel to the main church. After the overall translation of the priest building, the dilapidated part will also be repaired, and the repaired priest building will play more functions.

architectural style

In the 21st year of the Republic of China (autumn of 1932), the pan Chuan Pu Catholic Church was rebuilt and completed in September 1933. It costs 170000 silver dollars, and the designer is French, so the church is a mixture of Gothic and French (Romanesque) architectural style. The church is of brick and wood structure, and its external wall is made of green bricks. The whole body of the church is cross shaped, with a pair of arc-shaped ear chambers on both sides. The layout of the church is Brasilia style three corridor. The original height of the tower is 36 meters, on which there is a clock imported from France. In the past, the clock tower sounded more than ten li; the hall is in a cross shape, 60.2 meters long and 19.52 meters wide, with an area of 1371.4 square meters, which can accommodate more than 3000 people.

Inside the church, 11 European style concrete columns with a diameter of about 1 meter stand side by side. The roof of the church is arched and decorated with stars. There are five large and small sacrificial platforms inside. The central large platform is dedicated to the Lord of the church, the Virgin Mary of the rose. Four small platforms are dedicated to the adoptive father of Jesus, Joseph, the Virgin Mary and the virgin Teresa from east to west. The daylighting windows on the walls are inlaid with multicolored glass, and the daylighting glass of the Third Bureau on the sides of the small altar on the left and right sides are carved with a colorful statue of church saints. The second floor of the church is a 20 meter long and 6 meter wide chanting platform, facing the grand altar.

In design, the vaulted ceiling of the church does not bear the weight of the roof, and the triangular roof truss inside the vault is the real stress body. The roof load is transmitted to the wall, column and ground through the triangular roof truss. This kind of western orthodox rib vault has never appeared in this area.

Facing the Minjiang River, it is still the largest Catholic Church in Fujian Province.

The origin of the name

It is a common saying in Fuzhou that "you can watch the horses before the horse storehouse, and you can watch the boats inside the Pu".

Cangqian is Cangqian mountain, on the north of Nantai Island, facing the Taijiang river. After the Opium War, Fuzhou was set up as one of the trading ports. In cangqianshan, consulates, foreign firms, churches, missionary schools and hospitals were set up. Cangqianshan south in the Qing Dynasty Guangxu years was opened up to occupy more than 250 acres of racecourse. During the Hongzhi period of Ming Dynasty (1498), the eunuchs ceded Zhongzhou free of charge to foreigners to open up a new port for the berthing of fanchuanpu, hence the name "fanchuanpu", which was later renamed "fanchuanpu".
