brief introduction
The oyster shell house with a history of several hundred years is a house built by the ancestors of Xiaozhou Village. The villagers dug a large number of oyster shells from the coastal sandbank with local materials. It is said that the house made of this material is warm in winter and cool in summer, and it is not afraid of rain and insects. It is very suitable for the climate of Lingnan. There used to be more than 100 oyster shell houses in Xiaozhou Village. Now most of them have been demolished, leaving only four. At present, Haizhu District has made relevant plans to carefully protect the ancestral halls, ancient trees, oyster shell houses and other historical features in the village, and some even need to restore them on the basis of preserving their original appearance.
After 400 years of vicissitudes
Recently, the new village committee in Siqian Town saw the only oyster shell house in the village (as shown in the picture). Speaking of its age, it is said that it is 400 years old.
The oyster shell house is located in the village group of Zhonghe square, and its owner is Mrs. Tang, who is in her 80s. Four hundred years ago, the ancestors of Zhonghe square collected oyster shells to build houses. There were seven or eight oyster shell houses. Grandma Tang's oyster shell house used to cover an area of 100 square meters, but now it has only 50 square meters left. The walls of the house are 0.4 meters thick and are built with mud and oyster shells. The oyster shell walls are supported by Chinese fir in the middle, which are solid and solid. The top is covered with tiles. The room is extremely dry. People living in it feel cool in summer without air conditioning, and warm in winter.
There used to be several such oyster shell houses in Zhonghe square, but now there is only one of Mrs. Tang's. According to Liang YENENG, a village resident, oyster shell houses were demolished in the late 1950s. At that time, Mrs. Tang's oyster shell house was divided into two parts. One part was privately owned, and the other part was converted into the office of the production team. It was not demolished at that time, so Mrs. Tang's 50 square meter oyster shell house survived.
Now, the office of the villagers' group has been moved to a new office building. In order to preserve the historical product of oyster shell house, the villagers' group has decided not to build a new house here. If the villagers want to build a building, they have to choose another place. In this way, the oyster shell house was preserved.
