In 1957, on the initiative of mayor Zhu Guang, Guangzhou municipal government approved the establishment of the Museum of fine arts, becoming one of the earliest American museums in China. A gallery will be built at the back of the building. There are two branches, Gao Jianfu Memorial Hall and Chen Shuren Memorial Hall.

In 2002, it was moved from the east side of Zhenhai building, Yuexiu Park, 988 Jiefang North Road, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou city to No. 13 Luhu Road, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou City, and renamed "Guangzhou Art Museum", and officially delisted on February 13, 2018.

The winning design of Guangzhou Art Museum is like a blooming hero flower (kapok) independent of the center of the stretched water surface. All exhibition halls are surrounded by a circular atrium. The design scheme is from Herzog + Partners Asia (German Herzog and partners architectural design firm). The design starts from the side of the Pearl River, with arcades on both sides of the Northern Square. A series of sunken courtyards are used to provide safe passage and pleasant landscape, ventilation and lighting for the underground space.

Guangzhou Art Museum
There are more than 7000 pieces of paintings in the collection, including the painting of ink bamboo by Wentong in the Northern Song Dynasty, the painting of Yu bamboo by Li Yan in the Yuan Dynasty, the twelve scenes of Wumen by Shen Zhou in the Ming Dynasty, the painting of birds gathering in autumn by Lin Liang, and Shi Tao's poetry and paintings in the Qing Dynasty. Since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Guangdong painters have collected the most calligraphy and painting works. The museum has published three collections of paintings, one collection of paintings of Ming and Qing Dynasties, and other collections of paintings by Shen Zhou, Shi Tao, Badashanren and Ju Lian.
Outside the exhibition hall, the wuxinggang stone Corridor around the mountain in front of the square was completed in 1987, with 118 square meters of famous calligraphic inscriptions from the Jin Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. In 1998, a new stone corridor was built in the east of the museum site, with 58 square meters of inscriptions of "Chi Su Yi Fen", all of which are the stone inscriptions of the Haishan immortal Museum in the late Qing Dynasty.

In October 1989, a stele gallery was built on a small hill in front of the museum, with 108 versions of famous calligraphies engraved on it for visitors to enjoy. The stele Gallery of Guangzhou Art Museum is an important part of the Yuexiu mountain Xianggang cultural and historical relics tourist city.
In the spring of 1993, a new famous gallery was set up on the east side of the main building of Guangzhou Art Museum. In front of the gallery, there are trees and sculpture fountains, presenting a strong artistic atmosphere. Nearly 100 masterpieces are displayed on the upper and lower floors of the gallery. The gallery regularly holds exhibitions of famous artists, establishes personal files of famous artists, and concurrently sells works of art.
Guangzhou Art Museum is responsible for collecting art works, holding art exhibitions, studying art academy and promoting art education. It is a symbol of the cultural and artistic taste of Guangzhou, a southern city.

Exhibition of Wang Ren's paintings
The exhibition of Wang Ren's paintings, jointly held by Guangzhou Academy of fine arts, Guangdong Artists Association and Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts Gallery, will be held in Guangzhou Academy of fine arts gallery from February 25 to March 8, 2006. It will display nearly 100 works of Chinese figure paintings by the author since the 1970s.
Mr. Wang Ren, formerly known as Wang Junfu. Born in Chongqing, Sichuan Province in 1945, his ancestral home is Huangpi, Hubei Province. He graduated from the middle school attached to the Fine Arts Department of Hubei Academy of Arts in 1965. He graduated from the Department of Arts and crafts of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1970, and was assigned to Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province to work in mass art for 20 years. He was transferred back to Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in October 1990. He has successively served as the director of Art Museum, deputy director of scientific research department, director of teaching and scientific research department, director of technology teaching and research section, researcher and vice president of the college. He is now a professor, master's supervisor and deputy inspector. He is a member of China Artists Association.
As one of the directors of Guangzhou Academy of fine arts, Mr. Wang Ren has been employed by the Ministry of culture as a member of the national teaching evaluation expert group of art colleges and universities, and by the Department of education of Guangdong Province as a member of the expert group. He has participated in the adjustment of the catalogue of fine arts and Design Majors in national colleges and universities, the discussion and demonstration of the credit system scheme and teaching evaluation scheme of national art colleges and universities, and the teaching evaluation of relevant colleges and universities. In May 2000, he visited France, Italy and other seven countries as deputy head of the delegation of China Academy of fine arts. It has contributed to the reform and development of higher art education in China.
Mr. Wang Ren once carried out art investigation along the Silk Road of China, and then visited and investigated Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, seven European countries, Japan, the United States, Egypt and other countries, which enabled him to absorb rich nutrition from ancient Chinese art, folk art and foreign art. In the 1960s and 1970s, he also paid a visit to Moldova Pioneers of the reform of Chinese figure painting, such as Jiang Zhaohe, Yang Zhiguang, Liu Wenxi, Fang Zengxian, Huang Zhou and so on, have made serious research on their works. All these prompted him to think deeply and study Chinese art, especially the development of Chinese figure painting, and put the research results into practice, making valuable exploration.
