Yuxi No.1 middle school, founded in 1925, was originally called Yuxi county junior high school. Its first principal was Wang Jizhen. In 1939, Yunnan Provincial Yuxi middle school (Yuxi middle school for short) was established and a high school department was set up. In 1953, the Education Department of Yunnan Province identified Yuxi middle school as one of the seven key middle schools in Yunnan Province.
