China University of petroleum is a national key university directly under the Ministry of education. Historical evolution

Beijing Institute of petroleum

At the beginning of the founding of the people's Republic of China in 1953, the national economic construction was in urgent need of petroleum resources, and the development of petroleum industry was in urgent need of professionals. In this situation, based on the Department of petroleum engineering of Tsinghua University, Beijing Institute of petroleum, the first Petroleum University in New China, was established by gathering the relevant faculty and school running conditions of Peking University, Tianjin University, Dalian Institute of technology and other famous universities. It was subordinate to the Ministry of fuel industry and was one of the eight famous universities in Beijing at that time.

In October 1960, the University was designated as a national key university by the CPC Central Committee.

East China Petroleum Institute

In 1969, the school moved to Dongying, Shandong Province, where Shengli Oilfield is located, and changed its name to East China Petroleum Institute.

In June 1981, the graduate department was established in the original campus of Beijing Institute of petroleum.

University of Petroleum

In 1988, the University changed its name to Petroleum University, gradually forming a pattern of running schools in Shandong and Beijing.

In 1997, the University of petroleum officially entered the first batch of key universities under the national "211 Project".

In 2000, the University of petroleum was put under the management of the Ministry of education by CNPC.

In 2008, the University was selected for the first time in the "discipline innovation and talent introduction plan for colleges and universities" (referred to as "111 plan").

In 2010, the University became one of the first batch of 61 Pilot Universities to implement the "excellent engineer education and training plan".

In May 2011, it was rated as "National Graduate Employment typical experience university" by the Ministry of education.

In 2014, the Ministry of education signed an agreement with five major energy enterprise groups, including China National Petroleum Corporation, China Petrochemical Corporation, China National Offshore Oil Corporation, Shenhua Group Co., Ltd. and Shaanxi Yanchang Petroleum (Group) Co., Ltd., to jointly build China University of Petroleum (including China University of Petroleum (Beijing) and China University of Petroleum (East China)) Department.

In September 2017, it was selected as one of the first batch of "double first-class" world-class discipline construction universities in China. In the same year, it was recognized by the Ministry of education as the second batch of national model universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform.

In March 2018, the school was selected into the first batch of national new engineering research and practice projects of the Ministry of education. In May, CNPC and China University of Petroleum (East China) signed the strategic cooperation agreement between CNPC and China University of Petroleum (East China) in Beijing. In December, the University and the Management Committee of Qingdao West Coast new area signed cooperation agreements on the construction of gugukou science and Education Park of China University of Petroleum (East China).

In May 2019, gugukou science and Education Park of China University of Petroleum (East China) held a foundation laying ceremony in gugukou military civilian integration innovation demonstration zone.
