Yuanyangchi reservoir is located in Jiashan gorge, 12 kilometers southwest of Jinta County. It is the first large earth dam water storage project built in the Republic of China. The river basin above the dam covers an area of 12400 square kilometers, mainly storing the winter and Spring surplus water and flood in flood season of three rivers, namely, the Taolai River, the Qingshui River and the Linshui river.

The muyangchi Reservoir Engineering Office of Sufeng canal was established in March of the Republic of China (1943). Professor Yuan Suxin, director of the Department of water resources of Central University, was employed as the director of the engineering office. The construction started in June of the same year and was completed in 1947 Completed in May, the dam is 30 meters high and 26 meters high, with a total storage capacity of 12 million cubic meters. It is a medium-sized reservoir, with an irrigation capacity of 70000 mu. After the completion of the project, all the major newspapers and periodicals published news and comments in the main positions in that year, calling it "the first water storage project in China", "one of the largest water conservancy projects in Northwest China", etc. After the founding of new China, the reservoir has been strengthened and expanded for many times. The dam height has reached 37.8 meters and the total storage capacity has reached 105 million cubic meters. It has become a large reservoir worthy of the name for comprehensive utilization of irrigation, flood control and power generation. Its hydropower station is equipped with three 630 kW water turbine generator units, with a total installed capacity of 1890 kW and an annual power generation capacity of 10 million kwh. The irrigated area has reached 342000 mu.
