brief introduction
Beijing's FOXIANG Pavilion is a magnificent tower religious building, which is the center of the architectural layout of the summer palace. The word "incense of Buddha" comes from the praise of Buddhism to Buddha. The pavilion is modeled on the Liuhe tower in Hangzhou. It is built on a 20 meter stone platform with three stories on eight sides and four eaves. It is about 40 meters high (10.225 + 7.555 + 5.975 + 12.660 = 36.415 meters). There are eight big pillars of tielimu, which run straight through the top, with a 20 meter high stone platform under it. The upper level of the pavilion is called "shiyanfengjiao", the middle level is called "fengzhaohui", the lower level is called "Tianxiang outside the cloud", and the pavilion is called "foxiangge". The inner offering is to receive and guide the Buddha. On the new moon of each month, Cixi is here to burn incense and worship the Buddha.
Historical evolution
During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty (1736-1795), a nine storey longevity tower was built here, and the eighth floor was "ordered to stop construction" to rebuild the Buddhist Pavilion. In 1860 (the tenth year of Xianfeng), it was destroyed by the Allied forces of Britain and France. During the reign of Emperor Guangxu (1875-1908), it was rebuilt on the original site to worship the Buddha.
Architectural features
It is 37 meters high. It is built on a 20 meter high stone platform. It is supported by eight iron and pear pillars. The structure is complex and unique. The platform stands majestic. It carries the beautiful scenery of Yuanmingyuan and changchunyuan in the East, jingmingyuan and jingyiyuan in the west, and wanshoushan within ten miles. It skillfully integrates the "three mountains and five gardens" at that time, making it a large royal garden scenic spot. It is said that after the huge building was burned down by the British and French forces, it was rebuilt in 1891 at a cost of 780000 taels. It is the largest project of the summer palace. When you go to the Buddhist Pavilion, you can have a panoramic view of the surrounding scenery. The Buddhist Pavilion, 37 meters high, has three stories on eight sides and four eaves. It was built on a huge stone platform in front of the Wanshou mountain. This platform is built around the mountain. Lift the Buddhist Pavilion above the ridge. Looking up, you can see its posture everywhere.
Tourism characteristics
The pavilion stands on the majestic mountain, and the mountain is beautiful because of the pavilion. The Wanshou mountain is set off by the Pingzhang peak of the western mountains in the distance and the Yuquan mountain nearby. It is small and big, with extraordinary momentum, verdant pines and cypresses. The Kunming Lake facing the Buddhist pavilion just reflects the whole picture. The verdant mountains, the clear water and the light of the sky make people feel relaxed. The gardening technique that Chinese gardeners are fond of talking about, borrowing scenery, has been perfectly applied and embodied here.
The FOXIANG Pavilion is built on a hillside more than 60 meters high, 41 meters high, with 8 sides, 3 floors and 4 double eaves. Its shape is designed according to the Yellow Crane Tower in Wuhan. It was built in the Qianlong period for the reception and introduction of Buddhas. On the first and fifteenth day of the lunar new year, Cixi burned incense and worshipped Buddhas here. FOXIANG Pavilion is the central building of the whole garden, the symbol of the summer palace, and one of the best ancient Chinese buildings, with high architectural art value. In front of the pavilion, there are eight shaped steps. You can enjoy the scenery of Kunming Lake and the surrounding scenery by climbing on the stage.
The Buddhist Pavilion is a high-rise building "wisdom sea" in the summer palace, commonly known as "Wuliang hall". The top of the internal structure is supported by crisscross arches instead of beams. There was no wood in the hall, which was able to escape the fire in 1860. However, the Buddha statues in the hall and more than 1000 small Buddha statues on the outer wall of the hall were stolen by the great powers.
Related stories
When Qianlong built Qingyi Garden, he planned to build a nine storey pagoda here. When it was built to the eighth floor, Qianlong ordered to demolish the eight storey pagoda and rebuild an octagonal pavilion, namely the Buddhist Pavilion. There have always been different opinions about Qianlong's demolition of pagodas and construction of pavilions. One is that Qianlong built the longevity tower, which is nominally for his mother and empress, but in fact for the integration of the three mountains and five gardens, in order to make the longevity tower the main building of the eastern and Western Royal Gardens. However, when it was built on the eighth floor, it was found that it did not match the original imagination, so it was demolished to build pavilions. Another thought was that there were always many pagodas in the west of Beijing, so Qianlong decided to demolish them to build pavilions in order to avoid overlapping of pagodas. In fact, the construction of the pavilion has achieved good results. The pavilion is high and powerful, large and steady, and it is in harmony with the buildings in Qianshan.
There is also a legend that the emperor wanted to build a large garden in the beautiful area of Haidian. The first one was Emperor Qianlong. It is said that there is an ancient tomb at the foot of Wanshou mountain, which is the tomb of a princess of Ming Dynasty. It is said that this princess was not a good master at that time, and her tomb can't be moved! After hearing this, Qianlong said that he was afraid. When Qianlong came to the scene, he saw that the big stone door of the tomb had been opened, but there were eight big characters carved inside the door: "you don't move me, I don't move you!" Qianlong was scared to a cold sweat. He quickly ordered people to cover the earth back and build a big temple on longevity mountain to hold the ghosts who could not live in the dark. This is the Buddhist Pavilion.
