Beijing Institute of iron and steel industry
After the founding of the people's Republic of China, the Central People's government decided to establish the Institute of iron and steel in 1952 in order to train metallurgical professionals and meet the needs of socialist economic construction. In April of the same year, the Department of metallurgy and mining of Beiyang University, the Department of metallurgy of Tangshan railway University, the Department of metallurgy of Shanxi University, the Department of mining and metallurgy of Northwest Institute of technology, the Department of metallurgy and mining of Beijing Institute of technology, the specialized subject of iron and steel machinery, and the Department of mining of Tsinghua University formally established the Beijing Institute of iron and steel industry in Tsinghua University, with the functions of mining, metallurgy, machinery, metallographic phase treatment and metallurgy It belongs to 5 departments including pressure processing, with a four-year schooling.
In August 1953, Beijing Institute of iron and steel industry moved from Tsinghua University to Xueyuan Road, Haidian District. In the same year, the school began postgraduate education.
In 1954, Premier Zhou Enlai visited Beijing Institute of iron and steel industry for the first time. In the same year, the school system was changed to five years.
On August 17, 1956, Premier Zhou Enlai accompanied Prince Sihanouk to visit the steel yard. In the same year, the Department of physics and chemistry was established, with two majors of metal physics and metallurgical physical chemistry, with a length of five and a half years.
Beijing Institute of iron and steel
In 1960, Beijing Institute of iron and steel industry changed its name to Beijing Institute of iron and steel, and was approved as a national key university.
By the beginning of 1966, the Institute had 12 specialties, including mining, mineral processing, iron and steel metallurgy, metallurgy, metal pressure processing, metallurgical mechanical drawing, mining machinery, metallurgical furnace, casting, metal physics, metallurgical physical chemistry and industrial automation, with more than 800 teachers, more than 5000 undergraduate students and 120 foreign graduate students.
During the period of "Cultural Revolution", Beijing Iron and Steel Institute was destroyed and its enrollment was stopped for five years.
In October 1969, Lin Biao's "No.1 order" was issued, and Beijing Iron and Steel University was faced with the same fate of relocation as its neighboring brother universities. In December, Beijing Institute of iron and steel sent an advance team of 50 people to Jiangxi to plan to build a "May 7th" farm in Yugan County, and then build the school on the farm. Later, because it was not suitable to run a school locally, the advance team was sent to Yunnan and planned to merge with Kunming Institute of technology. Premier Zhou told Chairman Mao: there are many iron and steel industries in North China, so we can't do without iron and Steel Institute. Therefore, Beijing Institute of iron and steel continues to stay in Beijing.
In 1972, the school resumed enrollment. By 1976, a total of five three-year students were enrolled.
After smashing the gang of four, after restoration and rectification, Beijing Institute of iron and Steel established a normal teaching order and changed the length of schooling to four years.
In 1978, the majors of metal corrosion science, computer science, metallurgical automation instrument, mechanical manufacturing, fluid transmission and control, applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, mechanics, management engineering, science and technology foreign language were added. In the same year, we began to recruit two-year and four-year graduate students.
In 1981, with the approval of the State Council, the University became one of the first batch of doctoral and master degree awarding units in China.
In 1984, Beijing Institute of iron and steel submitted a request to the Ministry of metallurgical industry to change Beijing Institute of iron and steel into Beijing Beiyang university or Beijing University of science and technology. In the same year, with the approval of the State Council, it became one of the first batch of 22 universities to pilot graduate schools.
In 1987, it applied for three times to change its name to Beijing University of technology, Beijing University of materials science and technology, China University of materials science and technology, China University of metallurgy, North University, etc.
Beijing University of science and technology
In 1988, when Beijing Institute of iron and steel applied for the name change again, because Beijing Institute of technology had changed its name to Beijing University of technology, the leaders of the general office of the State Council negotiated with the school leaders and some old professors and decided to change its name to Beijing University of science and technology.
In May 1997, the University was one of the first batch to enter the ranks of "211 Project" universities.
In 1998, the school was transferred from the Ministry of metallurgical industry to the Ministry of education. In the same year, Beijing Metallurgical Management Cadre College was merged into the Institute.
In 2006, it became one of the first batch of universities to build 985 project advantage discipline innovation platform.
In 2007, it was selected as one of the first batch of universities to implement the national innovative experiment program for college students.
In 2008, as an Olympic and Paralympic competition venue, the school gymnasium completed judo, taekwondo, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby in Beijing Olympic Games.
In June 2010, it was selected into the first batch of "excellent engineer education and training plan" universities of the Ministry of education.
In 2011, he was selected into the discipline innovation plan of colleges and universities (111 plan).
In May 2013, it was rated as a national university with typical employment experience by the Ministry of education. In July, it was selected as the first demonstration base for studying in China by the Ministry of education.
In 2014, the steel Generic Technology Collaborative Innovation Center led by the University was selected into the university innovation ability improvement plan (2011 plan).

. In December of the same year, it was selected as one of the first batch of Beijing model universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform.
In September 2017, Beijing University of science and technology was selected as one of the first batch of "double first-class" world-class discipline construction universities in China.
In March 2018, it was selected into the first batch of "national new engineering research and practice projects" of the Ministry of education. In the same year, it became a University jointly built by the Bureau of science, technology and industry for national defense and the Ministry of education, and was selected as one of the first batch of Pilot Universities in the comprehensive reform of "three complete education" by the Ministry of education.
In August 2019, it was rated as the national innovation and entrepreneurship typical experience university by the Ministry of education. In September, he became a founding member and Council member of China Artificial Intelligence Education Association.
