Gongger Jiubie peak, belonging to the Kunlun Mountains, with an altitude of 7530 meters, is located in SUBASHI village, bulukou Township, aktao County, Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. It is the second peak of the West Kunlun Mountains. Because the top of the mountain is covered with snow all the year round, it is like a hat worn by herdsmen, so local herdsmen call it "Gongge Jiubie", which means "white hat"; because its height is slightly lower than gongge'er peak, it is also called "xiaogongge'er", but its mountain terrain is no less than gongge'er mountain.
The north slope of Gongger Jiubie peak is a steep cliff, and the south slope is a complex ice and snow area. It consists of four main ridges: Northwest ridge, East Ridge, southwest ridge and North Ridge.
In May 2015, glacier jump and ice avalanche occurred in Jiubie peak of Gongger, resulting in the disappearance of 15000 Mu grassland and the damage of 70 herdsmen's houses.
Geography
Gongge'er Jiubie peak, 7530 meters above sea level, is located at 75.2 degrees east longitude and 38.6 degrees north latitude; gongge'er peak, 7649 meters above sea level (also known as 7719 meters above sea level), is located at 75.3 degrees east longitude and 38.6 degrees north latitude; the two peaks are on the ridge line at the western end of the West Kunlun Mountains, with a straight-line distance of only 15 kilometers. They are connected by mountains, which are a pair of sister peaks. They are located in aketao County, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. They belong to the West Kunlun mountains together with the MUZTAG peak in the south, and are known as the three famous peaks of the East Pamir Plateau.
Gongge'er Jiubie peak is the second peak of the West Kunlun Mountains. Because the top of the mountain is covered with snow all the year round, which is like a hat on the head of herdsmen, local herdsmen call it "gongge'er Jiubie", which means "white hat"; because its height is slightly lower than gongge'er peak, some people call it "xiaogong'er", but its mountain terrain is no less than gongge'er peak. The north slope of Gongger Jiubie peak is a steep cliff, and the south slope is a complex ice and snow area.
Gongge'er mountain area is steep, with an altitude of more than 7000 meters. The modern snow line is about 5900 meters above sea level, so the scale of glaciers and glacial landforms are fully developed. The kelayailak glacier, which stretches for tens of kilometers, is pouring down from the waist of GongGeEr peak and GongGeEr Jiubie peak. The thickness of ice and snow can even reach 100 meters. The snow slopes of the ice peaks on the glacier are winding and scattered, with numerous light and dark cracks. There is also a hanging glacier, which is hanging on the top of the mountain, and seems to collapse at any time.
Due to various reasons, avalanches are frequent in this area, small-scale avalanches can be seen at any time, and large-scale avalanches often occur. At the end of May 1983, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake occurred in this area, which triggered a rare avalanche with a drop of 1000-2000 meters.
In May 2015, glacier leaping and ice avalanche occurred in Gongger Jiubie peak, 15000 mu of grassland and hundreds of livestock disappeared around, and 61 herdsmen's houses were damaged. The main cause of glacier change is climate warming. After climate warming, the temperature of ice increases, the mobility of ice increases, and the glacier itself has changed to a certain extent. In addition, the precipitation in the area where Gongger Jiubie peak is located increases, and the top of glacier thickens and pressure increases. However, the relatively low altitude and high temperature at the bottom of glacier lead to the bottom jump and top ice avalanche.
climatic conditions
The East Pamir Plateau, where the Gongger Jiubie peak is located, is inland, and there are many mountains blocking the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean airflow. Therefore, the climate is very dry, and the precipitation mainly comes from the interaction of the upper westerly belt airflow and the polar cold wet airflow. At an altitude of about 7500 meters, the average temperature is - 20 ℃, the lowest is - 30 ℃, and the maximum wind force is 9-11, usually about 7. The frequent change of weather is a major feature of this area. Even in summer, the mountain may be windy and snowy, and the temperature can drop to - 20 ℃. Generally, mountaineering activities should be arranged from June to August.
expedition
The history of mountaineering in this area can be traced back to the early 20th century. In 1924, new Klein, an American, made an investigation on Mount Gongger Jiubie. In 1956, the joint mountaineering team of China and the former Soviet Union ascended mount Gongger Jiubie for the first time. On July 12, 1981, the British mountaineers, baudeton, baudman, Ruth and tusk, ascended Gongger mountain for the first time.
From Urumqi, take a plane or train to Kashgar, an important town in southern Xinjiang, and then take a bus to travel southwest along the China Pakistan highway to Gaizi, and then travel 50km eastward along the simple highway to Houzi grassland at the Northeast foot of gongge'er peak. The base camp is located at the end of kulugang glacier, 3600m above sea level. If you go to the south slope, you can walk along the China Pakistan highway to the lakeside of Kalakuli lake, cross the KANGXIWA River and trek to the foot of the mountain.
