Smangus (Thai: Smangus) is a Thai tribe located in Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County, Taiwan. In the early days, it was called the black tribe because of its location in deep mountains and inconvenient transportation. Later, due to the discovery of Shenmu group, it developed tourism and became an important tourist site.
background
Simakus is located in Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County, on a high mountain of 1500 meters above sea level. Simakus is probably the deepest and most remote aboriginal tribe in Taiwan. It was only in 1979 that electricity was supplied here, and the external road was opened at the end of 1995. Before the opening of the external road, residents can only spend several hours on foot to cross the valley to the Xinguang tribe, and then use the local road to contact the outside world and obtain livelihood materials. After the discovery of Shenmu and the opening of roads, the problem of residents' travel was initially solved, and tourists began to rush here. Today's tribes are very different from those in the past.
history
There are many legends about the origin of the Taiya people. Generally speaking, they think that the origin is in Nantou County or Dabajian mountain. They belong to the simakus people of the Taiya nationality. According to the old man's dictation, they believed that their ancestors came from pinsbkan (today's Ruiyan tribe), in quri, near Dabajian mountain, Nantou County This is the highest point of Northern Taiwan. Looking from a high place, you can see different river basins. The people then migrated to the north, East, and other directions. One of them reached Zhenxibao and Xinguang on the left bank of today's Tak Jinxi River, and continued to expand to Taigang, xiuluan, Tianpu and other places Therefore, the relationship between simakus and Yufeng and Naro, which belong to mrqwang, is closer, but the relationship between simakus and Xinguang tribe, which belong to knazi, which is just across the river. There was even a war between knazi and mrqwang during the Japanese occupation.
As for the origin of simakus, according to the elders of the tribe, it is to commemorate an ancestor named Mangus, and Smangus is the honorific name for this ancestor.
During the period of Japanese occupation and after the end of the war of knazi, the simakus were forced to leave their original places of residence. Some of the simakus moved northward around Kanan Noro (Yufeng mountain) to the tanyao tribe. Later, in line with the Japanese policy, they collectively moved to rahaw tribe and slaq tribe in Xinle village.
After the Japanese withdrew from Taiwan, the original residents of simakus began to move back to their original places of residence. Since then, the uninhabited simakus tribe began to build their houses and farmland. Located in the deep mountains, simakus has inconvenient transportation and hard life, but it is of great significance for the people to return to the place where their ancestors lived.

The discovery of Shenmu
According to the ranking released by the Forestry Bureau in 1996, both the second and third place giant trees are located in the giant wood District of simakus. These two giant trees belong to Sabina chinensis. The second one is 20.5 meters in circumference, and the third one is 19.7 meters in circumference. The discovery of simakus' giant wood is not accidental, but the result of long-term search by the people.
In 1991, when Zeng Zhenchuan, the neighborhood leader of simakus tribe, and others came to baling area, they found that the local life had been greatly improved by the tourism brought by giant trees and the planting of honey peaches. On that day, when the neighborhood leader was sleeping, he vaguely heard God's instruction that there were giant trees in simakus. Later, the neighborhood leader remembered that there were red water and big trees in the direction of Yuanyang Lake. After returning to the tribe, he mobilized local residents to look for giant trees. After two or three months of searching, he found the magnificent giant wood area. Through various channels, the tribe publicized the existence of giant wood to the outside world, and a few tourists also came to see the beauty of giant wood. The discovery of giant wood also promoted the development of simakus road. Before the road was opened, the residents had to go down the mountain to the takkin Creek Valley, and then climb up the Xinguang tribe to contact the outside world, which took three to four hours. People's livelihood materials must also be carried up and down the mountain by people to the tribe. After the discovery of Jumu, fan Zhenzong, head of Hsinchu County, came to inspect and instructed to open the road to simakus as soon as possible. This industrial road arrived at the tribe at the end of 1995 and brought the development of simakus to different stages.
As it takes five or six hours to visit Shenmu, the tribe is considerate of the needs of tourists and sets up a public toilet at the mountaineering entrance. The villagers use local materials to build a public toilet with bamboo. Visitors can have an unobstructed view of the mountain when they go to the toilet. Unexpectedly, it has become a popular light viewing spot of the tribe.
"Come out quickly after going to the toilet. I'll go to the toilet to see the scenery." No mistake. You can often hear such conversations at the mountaineering entrance of simakus Shenmu group. Many tourists come here to go to the toilet, not for "convenience", but to see the beautiful scenery.
Zeng Zhenchuan, the elder of the tribe, pointed out that the viewing toilet at the entrance of jumuqun mountain was built by the people themselves. In order to express the spirit of integration of the tribe and nature, the toilet materials were all made of local bamboo and wood. Besides the gate, there was no other barrier for the toilet. When tourists went to the toilet, they could overlook the mountains and beautiful waters, and some tourists often squatted until their legs felt numb.
Construction of the church
Although the Taiya people had their own beliefs in the past, the main belief of simakus today is Christianity. The smarkus church is the most important local organization, belonging to the taiyar middle Church of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan. According to the communique of the simakus Church in 1999, Yu Guojin, a member of the simakus people, attended a gathering of the Taiyao tribe in 1948. He took the Japanese version of John's Gospel manual from pastor ye TingChang and brought it back to simakus, so that the simakus people began to contact Christianity. Later, Western missionaries and foreign priests all contributed to the church.
In the early days, the church building was relatively simple. It was damaged by lightning. The people rebuilt the new church in two weeks. After the tribal life gradually improved, the people began to build a new church. On January 29, 1999, the church was consecrated. On that day, members from all over the world gathered here to celebrate the completion of the church.

Both c'uli' and squaliq mean "human". These two dialects can be seen in Jianshi township where simakus belongs, but the population who speak saikoulik dialect is larger, and the language of simakus also belongs to saikoulik dialect.
