Shengshou pagoda is located on the top of taping mountain (Nanshan) in Changle City, 40 kilometers east of Fuzhou City, so it is also called "Nanshan pagoda". Shengshou pagoda was built in October of the seventh year of Zhenghe (1117) of Song Dynasty. It is 27.4 meters high. It is made of stone and imitates the style of pavilions. It has seven floors and eight corners. In the tower, there is a hollow vault chamber with a curved stone step. The wall of the pagoda is embossed with lotus sitting Buddha, the base of the pagoda is xumizuo, the corner is carved with Hercules, the eight sides are decorated with stone carvings such as lion and peony, and the eaves and corners are decorated with Dougong. On the second floor, a plaque of "Shengshou pagoda" is carved under the Western eaves.
Shengshou pagoda
Shengshou pagoda, also known as Sanfeng Temple Pagoda, is located in Nanshan (Tashan), Wuhang street, Changle District, Fuzhou City.
The pagoda has seven octagonal storeys. It is a stone structure with a height of 27.4 meters. On the first floor, the pagoda wall is decorated with exquisite reliefs of Buddhist stories. It is a precious object to study the stone carving art of architecture in Song Dynasty. Shengshou pagoda was the watchtower overlooking Taiping port, and also the beacon tower for Zheng He's fleet to enter Taiping port.
Development history
The pagoda was built by Lin angshe, a native of Huaen (Chaisang) in Jinfeng, and the monks of fajian temple. It was built in the third year of song Shaosheng (1096) and completed on October 23, the seventh year of Zhenghe (1117).
In Yongle period of Ming Dynasty, it was changed into Sanfeng Temple Pagoda. In the third year of Hongzhi in the Ming Dynasty (1490), Panfu, the magistrate of Changle County, was renamed Yanta.
On May 10, 1961, it was announced as the first batch of provincial cultural relics protection units by Fujian Provincial People's Committee.
On September 2, 1981, the state allocated funds for maintenance. The bottom of the corridor on each floor was fixed with reinforced concrete, and the cracks were grouted with high-pressure cement. The defective components were repaired, the fences on each floor were restored, the lightning rods and electric lights were re installed, and the tower terrace was built in the style of Song Dynasty.
It was completed on October 1, 1984 at a cost of 68500 yuan, of which 55900 yuan was used to repair the tower.
In 2006, it was announced by the State Council as the Sixth Batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
Features of scenic spots
Tower octagonal seven storey, stone imitation wooden pavilion style, 27.4 meters high, built on nearly a Zhang high platform. The base of the tower is Hercules, decorated with stone carvings such as lions and peonies on eight sides. The reliefs on the tower walls and the round sculptures in the niches are mostly based on Buddhist stories. The shape is vivid and the expression is lifelike. On the wall of the first tower, there are relief pictures of Manjusri, Puxian, fifty Arhats, sixteen flying musicians and Buddhist stories. From the first floor to the sixth floor, there are 25 lotus Buddhas on the wall of the pagoda, which are divided into two rows with four Buddhas in each row, a total of 200 Buddhas. At the corner of the tower, there is a stone statue to protect the Dharma king, holding or pressing the sword, wearing helmet and armor, stepping on the lotus and protecting the top of the treasure. All kinds of reliefs are vivid and simple in style.
At the corner of the tower, there are leaning columns, and each layer of the eaves is folded out. Under the eaves of each layer, the wooden structure is imitated. The corner is made of melon prism. There is a stone foundation at the bottom of the column, and the column head is paved with a bucket arch. On the wall of the tower, there is a Buddhist niche, in which the relief Buddha statue sits on the Baolian.
On the forehead of the first floor, the word "wild goose pagoda" is engraved. On the walls of the sixth and seventh floors, there are six records of building the pagoda. On the right side of the South Gate of the seventh floor, there are Inscriptions: "Sheng Shou pagoda's current politics and Ding you's garden will be full on October 23, with the leaders of Chen Zhiqian, Dai Shun, Zheng Kang, Zhou Shou and Lin BOCAI."
