Detian waterfall is located in Detian village, ShuoLong Town, Daxin County, Chongzuo City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on the upper reaches of Guichun River on the border between China and Vietnam. Affected by the epidemic, the scenic spot will resume operation in March 2020.

Geological formation

The strata in the area of Detian waterfall are mainly dolomitic limestone of Middle Devonian, which is a typical karst waterfall. The upper reaches of the river is Guichun River, which flows through Vietnam. This section of the river is a branching channel with wide and shallow riverbed and many river bars and beaches. When approaching the Detian waterfall, the height difference between the downstream riverbed and the top riverbed of the waterfall is about 6 meters. In order to find the shortest path to reach the downstream water surface, the flow of Guichun River takes its way in the Baiyun rock bud in the upper riverbed of the waterfall,

The stratum at the steep drop of Detian waterfall is dolomitic limestone of Middle Devonian Donggangling formation, while the bottom of the waterfall is clastic rock stratum of Lower Devonian grayish green, yellowish green and yellowish brown siltstone, argillaceous siltstone and shale. Siltstone, argillaceous siltstone, shale and other clastic rocks have poor erosion resistance and are easy to be eroded by water flow. Dolomite has strong erosion resistance, and the slope composed of thick layered dolomite is stable. Although dolomite can be eroded by water, its dissolution speed is slow, far less destructive than water flow erosion, and the solubility of dolomite itself is not very high Strong.

In addition, the corrosion resistance of dolomite is higher than that of sand shale, and the waterfall water erodes the base of the cliff, hollowing out the bottom of the cliff, resulting in the instability and collapse of the cliff. Therefore, the cliff retreats more in the most concentrated part of the water flow, that is, the most erosive part (mostly in the middle of the waterfall). This is also the case of Detian waterfall. The natural gradient of Guichun River Valley is large.
