Development history
In the early 1960s, senior police officers such as Senior Assistant Commissioner of police Wei Leifu began to study the methods of collecting Hong Kong police history and put forward the idea of establishing a police museum. The police historical records Committee was set up in July 1964 to implement the plan for the construction of the museum and to collect cultural relics. However, it was not able to find an address for the construction until the expansion project of the Hong Kong police headquarters was completed in 1976, with 50 square meters as a temporary site. In 1982, the museum moved to the Tai Sheng commercial building in Wan Chai.
In 1984, the Hong Kong Government approved the renovation of the former Wan Chai gap police station, which was completed in 1939, as a new site for the Police Force Museum. A total of HK $1.6 million restoration project with public and private donations was carried out from 1987 to 1988. It was officially opened to the public on November 25, 1988, and was unveiled by the then Deputy Commissioner of police (Management), Mr. Bai lipen.
With the opening of the Police Force Museum for more than 20 years, the existing facilities are becoming obsolete and aging. The Architectural Services Department (ASD) started a 10 month comprehensive renovation project in 2009, which is the first major renovation project since its opening. The museum was closed on November 2 of the same year for renovation, including the replacement of Exhibition cabinets, LED lighting system and air conditioning with environmental protection function, and the addition of tactile guide path; the floor glass railings, awning, flower trough and re paving floor tiles were installed outside the museum to improve the surrounding environment. The planning of the updated Pavilion is roughly the same as before. It is divided into police history exhibition room, triad and drug exhibition room, police present and past exhibition room, old heroin workshop and special exhibition room. After the completion of the project, the pavilion was cut on October 15, 2010 by Senior Assistant Commissioner of police and chairman of the police museum Advisory Committee, Mr. Ma Weixiang, and officially reopened on October 17, 2010.
