The ancient Buddha cave in Putuo Mountain was originally a cave. During the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty, monk Ren Guangjie thatched in the cave. Later, he became famous for the fact that his body was not rotten in the cave. In 1918, monk Kaiming and a businessman surnamed Zhang built an nunnery in Dongze. There are 31 nunneries with a construction area of 1230.18 square meters. There were two monks living in Zhoushan when it was liberated. After the two monks left in 1960, this nunnery was used as a business house. It was not until the end of 2005 that it was officially returned to Putuo Mountain Buddhist Association. In order to provide more places for worshiping Buddha and new scenic spots, and to promote the sound and rapid development of tourism in Putuo Mountain, the Putuo Mountain Buddhist Association invested heavily in the restoration of ancient Buddha Caves and nunneries in early 2006 according to the principle of repairing the old as before.
The newly restored ancient Buddha cave nunnery faces east from the west, embraces the sea in front of the nunnery, views the sea from a distance, and listens to the sound of the waves near.
