In the first Opium War, the Qing government was defeated by Britain. After the signing of the Nanjing Treaty, the two countries ceded Hong Kong Island to Britain together with Yazhou in 1842.

The northeast coast of Yazhou is the first inhabited area on the island. Hongsheng temple on Yazhou street has a history of more than 100 years.

Around 1940, British troops built Aberdeen battery on Yukui mountain of Yali island to guard the southern coast of Hong Kong and Lamma Island. Later, in order to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Japanese army, the fort was destroyed by the garrison during the Second World War. At that time, the English name of yashizhou was Aberdeen Island, so the name of the fort was transliterated as yabadian fort. By the late 1970s, the development of Ap Lei Chau began, and the government changed its name to Ap Lei Chau.

In 1970, the Hong Kong Electric Company set up a power plant in the northwest of Ap Lei Chau.

In 1980, the first yalaozhou bridge was opened to traffic. Before its opening to traffic, the residents of Ap Lei Chau only took the street ferry to and from Aberdeen. In the same year, Yazhou estate was completed.

In 1987, Lidong estate and Yu'an garden, located in the east of Yazhou, were completed.

In 1989, the power plant was demolished and moved to Lamma Island. Haiyi Peninsula, a private housing estate, was completed between 1992 and 1994.

On August 16, 1994, a rainstorm caused a slope collapse on the hillside beside Yazhou Bridge Road, resulting in traffic interruption between Yazhou estate and Haiyi peninsula. The Yau Ma Tei Ferry operates a temporary route to take passengers between Haiyi Peninsula and Hong Kong larva market.

In 1994, the second yalaozhou bridge was completed (in fact, the bridge was built side by side beside the original yalaozhou bridge, and then the driving direction of the two groups of bridges was adjusted), so that the traffic in and out of yalaozhou changed from two lane two-way traffic to four lane two-way traffic.

Traffic problems
