Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited is the stock exchange of Hong Kong. The HKEx is a holding company. Its main business is to own and operate the only stock exchange and Futures Exchange in Hong Kong and its related clearing houses. At present, HKEx is the only institution operating the Hong Kong stock market. Without the consent of the financial secretary, no individual or institution may hold more than 5% of the shares of HKEx. On September 11, 2006, HKEx became a constituent stock of Hang Seng Index.
In 1999, the financial secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region proposed a comprehensive reform of Hong Kong's securities and futures market in order to enhance Hong Kong's competitiveness and meet the challenges brought about by market globalization. According to the reformer, the stock exchange of Hong Kong Limited (SEHK) and the Hong Kong Futures Exchange Limited (HKFE) are demutualized and merged with the Hong Kong Central Clearing Company Limited (HKSCC), which is owned by the single holding company HKEx. The merger of the three companies was completed on March 6, 2000. On June 27, 2000, the Hong Kong stock exchange was listed in the form of introduction.
