Teaware museum was formerly known as the old military commander's residence, also known as flagpole house. This two-story building, with a history of more than 160 years, is the official residence of the commander-in-chief of the British armed forces in Hong Kong during the colonial period. It is the oldest existing British colonial building in Hong Kong. The buildings bear witness to Hong Kong's 100 years of colonial history and are of great historical value. They are now listed as statutory monuments in Hong Kong.
Tea set Museum
The former teaware Museum, also known as flagpole house, is located in Hong Kong Park, 10 Cotton Tree Road, Admiralty, Hong Kong Island. This two-story building, once the residence of the commander in chief of the British armed forces in Hong Kong during the colonial period, is the oldest existing British colonial building in Hong Kong. Now the building has been transformed into the Hong Kong Tea Set Museum. It is one of the museums of the Hong Kong leisure and Cultural Services Department and a branch of the Hong Kong Museum of art, displaying various Chinese tea set relics. The buildings bear witness to Hong Kong's 100 years of colonial history and are of great historical value. They are now listed as statutory monuments in Hong Kong.
Historical evolution
The official residence was built in 1846. It was called the headquarters building at that time. It was part of the Victoria barracks and became the office and residence of the British commander-in-chief in Hong Kong. The first general to use the building was major general d'egli, commander-in-chief of the British army in China. In 1932, the official residence was renamed the residence of the commander of the three services. In the Second World War, the roof of the building was destroyed by Japanese artillery shells, and then restored by the Japanese army as the commander's residence. After the war, the building became the residence of the commander of the British armed forces again. In 1978, the building was converted to use with the handover of the former Victoria barracks to the Hong Kong government. In July 1984, the original site was changed into a teaware Museum. In 1995, the new wing Luo Guixiang teahouse was added to the teaware Museum, which was opened on December 14 of the same year to display the exhibits donated by Hong Kong Tea Ware collector Luo Guixiang.
Collection
The two-story Pavilion is divided into six exhibition areas. The exhibition introduces the tea drinking history of Chinese people, and displays all kinds of tea sets from Tang Dynasty to modern times. The basic collection was donated by the late Luo Guixiang. Among them, Yixing tea set is the most representative. Chinese ceramics and seals are also on display. The museum regularly organizes ceramic art demonstration, tea art activities and lectures to promote ceramic art and Chinese tea culture.
Architectural features
The building belongs to the Greek classical Renaissance style. The whole building is made of granite with simple design and British colonial color. Due to the lack of architects, most of the early western style buildings in Hong Kong imitated the British style and adapted to the local technology, materials and hot and humid climate. The former commander of the armed forces residence was designed by British engineers referring to the military model manual and modeled on the Queen's house at Greenwich. In response to Hong Kong's subtropical climate and environmental improvement, such as the addition of wide veranda, high-rise floors, tiled roofs and wooden shutters, it helps to keep cool and avoid direct sunlight.
