origin
In a typhoon several centuries ago, a landslide forced Pengxi River to flow southward from today's Chinan forest recreation area. The sand and stone brought by the flood of Wenlan River in the north of the lake also blocked the Northeast exit of Liyu lake, forming today's Liyu lake. The newly formed Liyu lake is small in area. Later, the aborigines began to open up paddy fields and introduce water from Pengxi River. After the tail water flowed into the lake, the Carp Lake was destroyed It was only then that the pond gradually expanded, and a water gate was set up in the northeast, which became the appearance of the carp pond we see today.

Liyutan is the largest lake in Eastern Taiwan. It is located in Shoufeng Township, Hualien County. It is about half an hour's drive from Hualien, the largest city in Eastern Taiwan. It is located at the northernmost end of Huadong longitudinal valley national scenic spot. It is a barrier lake formed by the tributaries of the papaya and Hualien streams. The lake covers an area of about 104 hectares. The water comes from underground springs, so it is clear all the year round. The beautiful scenery of the lake often attracts many tourists. It is the most famous tourist attraction in the eastern half of Taiwan, next only to Taroko.
The water level of the lake is stable all the year round. There are colorful yachts, water bicycles, boating and wandering in the blue waves beside the water. You can enjoy the breeze and the Buddha's face. When the weather is good, Liyu mountain in the east of Tan will gather paragliding enthusiasts to ride the beautiful paragliding on the top of the mountain. With the willows on the lakeside and the vast green space, it is a good place for camping. It can accommodate more than 1500 people and watch the fireflies at night. The wooden viewing platform and arbor are dotted in it, which makes it more quiet and beautiful. You can enjoy the scenery freely. The lake road built along the foot of Liyu mountain is a good place for walking and cycling.
It has a picturesque environment and good water quality. Compared with the Sun Moon Lake in Nantou, it is better. In recent years, firefly seasons have been held every year in June, July and August, demonstrating the success of local ecological and environmental conservation.
There are two ways to get the name of "Liyutan": first, because the mountain on the side looks like a carp, so the mountain and the lake are named as carp together. There is a slang term for "there are carp on the Liyushan, and the water in the Liyutan is midstream". Another is that it comes from the tailuge people, the indigenous people in Taiwan. According to the tailuge people, who were the first indigenous people to live here, the shape of the pool looks like a newly captured carp jumping from the top of the mountain, so it is named after it.
