Historical evolution
The birth of the school
In the spring of 1952, there was a serious shortage of college students in China. The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China decided to transfer young intellectual cadres from the military, government, parties, people's organizations and other systems to colleges and universities to meet the needs of college enrollment, so as to meet the needs of the upcoming large-scale national construction. Shu Tong is in charge of the East China region. In Shanghai, he set up the "East China region transfers cadres of government departments and troops to the cram school of colleges and universities". The school is located in Hujiang University, which provides high school cultural cram for the transferred cadres to prepare for their study in Colleges and universities.
After the college entrance examination in 1952, according to the instructions of the higher authorities, the East China rapid experimental school was established by using all the teachers in the cram school. The school is located at No. 441, xitiyuhui Road, Hongkou District, and the principal is Hao Jinqing. The East China rapid experimental school consists of an industrial and agricultural experimental department and a teacher training department, which is a combination of the former Jiaotong University, East China Normal University and Shanghai three industrial and agricultural rapid middle schools. The teacher training department provided a lot of experience for the later training of secondary teachers. Although there are not enough teachers in East China rapid experimental school, there are also many famous teachers, such as educator ye Maoying, linguist Xu Weihan and philologist Luo JunTi.
In 1954, in order to meet the needs of the development of Shanghai's education, the Shanghai Municipal People's government entrusted the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of education with the responsibility of preparing for the establishment of Shanghai Normal College. It is decided that Chen Linhu, director of the Municipal Bureau of education, will be the director of the Preparatory Committee. Eight specialized subjects including Chinese, history, mathematics, political education, physics, chemistry, biology and geography will be set up in the first batch. The school is located in Caohejing District of Xuhui District. Before the completion of the new school building, the original East China express school will be temporarily used as the temporary school building. With the support of the Municipal Education Bureau and the use of the manpower, material resources and basic facilities of the East China accelerated school, the preparatory work was relatively smooth. The industrial and agricultural experimental Department of East China rapid experimental school is under the jurisdiction of Tongji University, while most of the staff of the teacher training department have entered the teachers college and become staff and teachers.
On July 5, 1954, Shanghai Teachers College was announced to be established, located at No. 441, xitiyuhui road. Shutong calligraphy school, a famous calligrapher, was born as a normal university which is responsible for training new teachers for basic education. All the buildings had red brick walls and big roofs. The five storey teaching building of nearly 10000 square meters was located in the center of the campus, which was the commanding height of Caohejing area at that time.

In the first half of 1956, the two teachers colleges actively planned and prepared for the capital construction. The school of the first normal university was selected from many places and finally decided to expand on the basis of the former Beijiao middle school, No. 150, Mingyan Road, Zhabei District. The second normal college is still in the original site of Shanghai Teachers College on Guilin road and is expanded on the basis of the college.
On July 14, 1956, Liu Jiping, vice mayor of Shanghai, announced the establishment of Shanghai First Normal College and Shanghai Second Normal College on the basis of Shanghai Normal College. At the same time, the system of Shanghai Teachers College was abolished. From then on, Shanghai began to train undergraduate normal students. Liao Shicheng, President and Chen Yuntao, vice president of the first normal college. Chen Linhu, President of the second Normal University (concurrently director of Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Education), Liu Fang and Shen Dezi, vice presidents. The first normal college cultivates liberal arts teachers in secondary schools, and the second normal college cultivates science teachers in secondary schools.
Tortuous development
On July 22, 1958, Shanghai No.1 and No.2 normal colleges, which had just been established for two years, merged into a comprehensive normal college dominated by arts and science, Shanghai Normal College. Premier Zhou Enlai personally appointed educator Liao Shicheng as the first president of Shanghai Normal University. The former site of Shanghai Conservatory of music, which was adjacent to the second normal university, was assigned to Shanghai Normal University and became the east of Shanghai Normal University. The former second normal university is located in the west of Shanghai Normal University. The total area of the hospital covers 558.65 mu.

In the 12 years before the "Cultural Revolution" in 1966, many subjects have emerged one after another, and many teachers' academic research is eye-catching, such as Zhu Wen, a translator of foreign literature, Ma Maoyuan, an expert of Chinese classical literature, Zhang Bin, an expert of modern Chinese, Cheng Yingliu, an expert of ancient Chinese history, Wei Jianyou, an expert of modern Chinese history, and Shen Dezi, an optical expert. These experts have a high reputation and influence in the academic circles. Their research results are in the leading position in China. They have also held national academic seminars and brought out a number of rising stars.
After the "Cultural Revolution" broke out in 1966, the school stopped recruiting students.
In September 1970, it began to recruit workers, peasants and soldiers.
At the end of 1971, the Shanghai municipal Party committee made a decision to merge East China Normal University, Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai Institute of education, Shanghai Institute of physical education and Shanghai part time work study normal university to form "Shanghai Normal University". In May 1972, Shanghai Normal University and other five universities were formally merged to establish Shanghai Normal University.
