Hubei Provincial Institute of Education
In 1930, Mr. Huang Jianzhong, director of Hubei Provincial Department of education, began to prepare for the construction of Hubei Provincial Rural normal college, which is located in Baoji nunnery in Wuchang.
In 1931, Hubei rural normal university was established as Hubei Provincial College of education. At the beginning of the college, there were two departments and one subject, namely, agricultural education department, rural education department and rural normal specialized subject. In 1932, the public education specialty was added, and in 1935, the agricultural education specialty was added. Each department is a four-year undergraduate course, and each specialized subject is a two-year junior college.
In the first half of 1936, under the pressure of the authorities, the college was forced to close down.
National Hubei Teachers College
In the autumn of 1941, the college was officially restored, and its site was Wufeng mountain in Enshi.
In the autumn of 1942, the Hubei provincial government invited Chen Yousong to serve as the president of Southwest Associated University through Li Siguang and others. In the same year, on the basis of the original, the school set up a one-year short training class for teachers majoring in history and geography, a class for music and a class for physical education, and an affiliated middle school and a primary school.
After Chen Yousong returned to Chongqing in the spring of 1944, he called on the national government to reorganize Hubei Provincial Institute of education into a national university. Li Siguang supported this. The Ministry of education of the national government adopted the opinions of all parties and changed Hubei Institute of education into a national Hubei Normal University, also known as "National Teacher", which was subordinate to the Ministry of education of the national government. Wang Dianji was the first president.
In May 1948, the national teacher returned to Wuhan, and the students borrowed from the Affiliated Hospital of national Wuhan University; in September and October, the school moved to Hanguang middle school, Yizhong Zhongshan Avenue, tangjiadun City, Hankou.
On July 16, 1949, the cultural and Educational Department of the Central South Military Control Commission took over the national division. Because the national division did not have a fixed school site at that time, it was suspended. All the school's products were handed over to Hubei Education College, which was established after the National Normal University.

Hubei Education College and Hubei teachers' Training College
On October 15, 1949, Hubei Institute of education opened. Up to 1952, the school had nine subjects, including education, Chinese language, mathematics, physics, sports and health, music, fine arts, drama and Russian, with 753 students.
In 1952, the Ministry of education carried out the nationwide adjustment of colleges and departments. Hubei provincial Party committee merged most of the faculty, students and books of the college into Huazhong University (now Huazhong Normal University). On the basis of some personnel, school property and school site left by Hubei Provincial Institute of education, Hubei Provincial Institute of teachers' further education was established, with the disciplines of education, Chinese, history, Russian, mathematics, physics and chemistry, geography, biology, fine arts, music, sports, etc.
Hubei Normal College and Wuhan Normal College
In April 1954, it was renamed Hubei Normal College.
In August 1955, it moved to mafangshan, Wuchang.
In the spring of 1956, the Provincial Department of Education decided to separate the two subjects of Chinese and history from Hubei Normal College and set up another Wuhan normal college; separate the physical education from Hubei Normal College and set up Wuhan sports normal college; separate the two short training classes of music and art from Hubei Normal College and merge them with the picture and music departments of central China Normal College to set up Wuhan Art normal college.
In the autumn of 1957, the Hubei provincial Party committee merged Hubei Normal College and Wuhan normal college to form a new Wuhan normal college, which was moved back to baoji'an, Wuchang. There are 620 teaching staff and 2138 students. There are seven subjects including Chinese, history, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and geography.
Wuhan Normal University
On August 8, 1958, the Hubei provincial Party committee approved the transformation of Wuhan normal college into Wuhan normal college. It has 1543 staff members, four departments of Chinese language, history, mathematics and physics, three specialized subjects of biology, geography and chemistry, and four teaching and research sections (groups) of Marxism Leninism, pedagogy, physical education and foreign language, which are run by both undergraduate and junior colleges.

In January 1984, the Hubei provincial Party committee decided to transform Wuhan Normal University from Wuhan city leader to Hubei Province direct leader and management in order to make overall arrangement and development of local higher education in Hubei Province; on August 11 of the same year, the Ministry of education agreed to transform Wuhan Normal University into Hubei University.
On September 26, 1984, the founding meeting of Hubei University was held, and Huang Zhizhen, governor of Hubei Province, and Qian Yunlu, deputy secretary of Hubei provincial Party committee, jointly unveiled the board. At the beginning of its establishment, there were 10 departments of Chinese, politics and education, history, foreign languages, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, geography and physical education, and three specialized subjects of education administration, Chinese and politics, with a total of 13 majors. There were 3072 college students and 34 graduate students. The school covers an area of 520 mu.
In 2004, the University was awarded "excellent" in the undergraduate teaching evaluation of the Ministry of education.
On September 19, 2010, the school became a member of T10 alliance of China's famous tourism schools.
In October 2011, the school cooperated with Changjiang publishing house to establish a book publishing and distribution organization "Huda book company".
In May 2012, he was selected into the "basic capacity building project of universities in central and Western China" of the Ministry of education.
On July 18, 2013, the people's Government of Hubei Province and the Ministry of education signed the opinion of jointly building Hubei University, and Hubei University became the first University jointly built by Hubei Province and ministry.
In January 2016, Hubei University signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the collaborative innovation center of national territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, becoming the cooperative unit of the collaborative innovation center.
On January 19, 2018, Hubei Provincial Department of education, Department of Finance and provincial development and Reform Commission jointly released the list of first-class universities and first-class discipline construction universities and disciplines in Hubei Province, and Hubei University was selected as the "first-class university construction university in China".
