The origin of place names
At the end of Ming Dynasty and the beginning of Qing Dynasty, in order to avoid military disaster or famine, Fujian coastal residents, as well as cruel officials, braved the dangerous route of the Taiwan Strait and crossed the sea to Taiwan to build another home. During the reign of emperor Shenzong of the Ming Dynasty, around 1600 A.D., a group of ancestors with four surnames, including Huang, Wu, Su and Fu, successively settled in the area for reclamation, which was the original four surnames for reclamation. Later, Wu Dafang, a member of the Li clan in Furong Township, the 16th capital of Funan County, Quanzhou, Fujian Province, moved in. There were many people, so he became the largest clan in the area. In the early days of reclamation, disputes over cultivated land, drainage or access roads were inevitable, which was a common phenomenon in Taiwan at that time. However, people who moved from one place to another and re searched for cultivated land were everywhere. Among the four primitive surnames in the area, only a few families of the Huang, Wu and Su people moved to other places to seek development.
In 1684, it was subordinate to Zhuluo county. In 1887, it was subordinate to Yunlin County. At that time, the Yuanchang administrative region was called baishadunbao yuanchangzhuang. Yunlin County was divided into 15 fortresses, and baishadunbao governed 23 fortresses.
Among the original four surnames, the ancestors of the Fu surname came from the Dongtou society of the official garden of the 16th capital, a branch of taoyuanpuhu, Funan County, Quanzhou, Fujian Province. They crossed Taiwan in 1741 A.D., the sixth year of Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty. There was a man with the common name of "Fu Yuanzhang", who led his people to open up land and canals and prepare for the construction of thatched cottages. He was open-minded and willing to serve people. He called the local people "Yuanzhang" because he was far away from the village and business trip, as well as the residents of this village. Therefore, the place name of Yuanzhang was established and was popular at that time. In the early days of Taiwan immigrants, people everywhere took people's names or surnames as place names, such as Yuanzhang. In the Qing Dynasty, there were counties under the prefecture, capitals under the county, townships and communities under the capital. Editor's note.)
During the reign of the Qing Dynasty, bandits were rampant. No matter in towns or villages, the victims were very fierce, and the residents suffered a lot. The local government was unable to protect the good people, so each village organized a group of strong men to protect themselves. Our village once helped the officers and soldiers defeat the bandits and showed bravery. According to the cloud, the government received good news and ordered all localities to change "yuanzhangzhuang" to "yuanchangzhuang". It means that the heaven and the earth are long and prosperous. It also helps that "Zhang" and "Chang" have the same pronunciation (but the pronunciation is different in Minnan dialect) and can be easily recognized.
According to Taiwan's literature series, in 1786, Lin shuangwen fought against the Qing Dynasty. In September of 1952, the "bandits" were stationed in dapuling, beating cats, douliumen, shuishalian and angukeng. On September 15, the commander of Lugang, pujibao, led 5500 troops. Li Fan Tongzhi and Huang Jiaxun led thousands of righteous people to help Zhuluo and Zha YingYuan Changzhuang. "And so on. At this time, the official records did not call "Yuanzhang" but "Yuanchang". It can be seen that the name of "Yuanchang" was decided long before the Lin shuangwen incident. The date of the decision remains to be determined.
In today's Taiwan, the word "Chang" in Minnan dialect, which calls "Yuan Chang", is the word "Zhang". It can still be heard everywhere. It can be seen that the name of "Yuan Chang" has been accepted by Taiwan residents and deeply rooted in their memory for many years.
Note 1: according to the ancestral tablet records of Fu's ancestral temple, there is a Fu Yuan emissary who was born on January 30, 1701, the 40th year of Kangxi and died on February 1, 1775, the 40th year of Qianlong. He was 74 years old. According to Fu's genealogy, Yuan envoys crossed the sea to reclaim wasteland in the sixth year of Qianlong (1741 AD), when they were 41 years old. According to Fu Qiulin and many other descendants of the Fu family, the yuan emissary, commonly known as Yuanzhang, was the forerunner of the Fu family in settling down in the local area. However, the envoys of the Yuan Dynasty are actually the "Yuan Zhang" himself or someone else, which remains to be confirmed by historical data.
Note 2: in the early Yuan Dynasty, the Huang clan, one of the original four surnames, once built a ancestral temple on the west side of the present Yuanchang gas station. Now part of the ancestral temple is residential, and part of the ancestral temple is cultivated land.
