Nanjing Medical University, founded in 1934 as Jiangsu Provincial College of medical administration, is one of the earliest universities in China to carry out postgraduate education. In 1957, the school changed its name to Nanjing Medical College. In 1962, the school was listed as one of the first six-year medical colleges in China. In 1981, the University was approved as the first batch of doctoral and master degree awarding units in China. In 1993, the University changed its name to Nanjing Medical University, which is a key construction University of Jiangsu Province. Today, Nanjing Medical University has become a medical university with a high reputation at home and abroad.

Historical evolution
In 1934, Jiangsu Provincial College of medical administration was established. Since its establishment, the university has set up health administration department, health education department and medical specialty. It is the first university to carry out health management education in China.
In 1938, due to the Anti Japanese War, he moved to Yuanling, Hunan Province. The school merged with Nantong Medical College and was renamed National Jiangsu medical college. In 1939, the school moved to Beibei, Chongqing.
In 1942, the school began to recruit master's degree students. In 1946, the school moved back to Zhenjiang.
In 1955, the health specialty was merged into Shanxi Medical College, and then developed into the school of public health of Shanxi Medical University.
In 1957, the school moved from Zhenjiang to Nanjing, officially renamed Nanjing Medical College.
In 1958, the school moved to Xuzhou, established Xuzhou branch of Nanjing Medical College, and later developed into Xuzhou Medical University. The former school building and Affiliated Hospital of Zhenjiang participated in the establishment of Zhenjiang Medical College.
In 1962, the school was listed as one of the first medical colleges to be changed into six-year system in China.
In 1970, Nanjing Medical College and Nanjing College of traditional Chinese medicine merged to form Jiangsu new medical college.
In 1972, Yangzhou health school was merged into Jiangsu new medical college and rebuilt into Yangzhou Branch of Jiangsu new medical college.
In 1976, Zhenjiang Health School of Jiangsu Province was merged into Jiangsu New Medical College (independent school) and rebuilt into Zhenjiang Branch of Jiangsu new medical college.
In 1978, Jiangsu new medical college was abolished. The former Nanjing Medical College of Jiangsu new medical college was partially rebuilt into (restored) Nanjing Medical College. After the reform and opening up, Jiangsu new medical college carried out "three school co construction" with Shanghai Second Medical College and Zhejiang Medical College. The former Nanjing College of traditional Chinese medicine of Jiangsu new medical college was partially rebuilt (restored) as Nanjing College of traditional Chinese medicine, and later developed into Nanjing University of traditional Chinese medicine. Yangzhou Branch of Jiangsu new medical college was renamed Yangzhou Branch of Nanjing Medical College, and later developed into Medical College of Yangzhou University. Zhenjiang Branch of Jiangsu New Medical College (formerly Zhenjiang Medical College) was renamed Zhenjiang Branch of Nanjing Medical College and later developed into Medical College of Jiangsu University.
In November 1981, with the approval of the State Council, the University became one of the first batch of doctoral and master degree awarding units in China.
In the same year, the Fourth People's Hospital of Nanjing was incorporated into Nanjing Medical College.
In 1993, Nanjing Medical College was renamed Nanjing Medical University.
In 2005, Nanjing Yuhua hospital was incorporated into Nanjing Medical University.

In October 2015, the people's Government of Jiangsu Province, the national health and Family Planning Commission and the Ministry of Education jointly issued a document and decided to build Nanjing Medical University, which was officially included in the provincial university.
In May 2017, the Institute of translational medicine of Nanjing Medical University was established. In October, Taizhou Clinical Medical College of Nanjing Medical University was established in Taizhou People's hospital. In the same year, the University was selected as a high-level university in Jiangsu Province.
In March 2018, the school of Pediatrics of Nanjing Medical University was established. In July, Xuzhou Clinical Medical College of Nanjing Medical University was established in Xuzhou central hospital. In the same year, the school of Biomedical Engineering and information of Nanjing Medical University was established.
In December 2019, the Yangtze River Delta Medical Education Alliance was established.
In May 2020, Yancheng Clinical Medical College of Nanjing Medical University was founded.
