Xiamen University is located in Siming South Road, Siming District, Xiamen city. It was founded in 1921 by the famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader, Mr. Tan Kah Kee, who was praised by Comrade Mao Zedong as "the banner of overseas Chinese and the glory of the nation". It is the first university founded by overseas Chinese in the history of modern Chinese education. Famous alumni include Yu Guangzhong, Lin Feng, Yi Zhongtian and Lu Xun. Close to Nanputuo temple, the study and living scenes of students and monks constitute a unique landscape of Xiamen University Campus and its surrounding area. Xiamen University is known as "one of the most beautiful campuses in China", and the unique architectural style of the combination of Chinese and western is the biggest attraction.

Private Xiamen University
In August 1919, Tan Kah Kee appointed 10 national education celebrities in Shanghai, including Cai Yuanpei, Huang Yanpei, Wang Jingwei, Yu Rizhang, Guo Bingwen, Hu Dunfu, Huang Wan, ye yuan and Deng Cuiying.
In October 1919, the first meeting of the Preparatory Committee of private Xiamen University was held to draft the outline of organization of Xiamen University. Deng Cuiying was elected as the first president of Xiamen University, Zheng Zhenwen as the provost, and he Gonggan as the general secretary.
On April 6, 1921, Xiamen University took advantage of Jimei school to hold the opening ceremony. When it was founded, it was private, with two departments of normal education (including arts and Science) and business.
On July 4, 1921, Lin Wenqing accepted the invitation of Mr. Tan Kah Kee to succeed as president of Xiamen University. During the period when President Lin Wenqing was in charge of the University, he successively added engineering, journalism, law, medicine and other departments, and initially built a multi-disciplinary comprehensive university.
In 1930, it was expanded into 5 colleges and 21 departments of Arts, science, law, business and education.
In the 25th year of the Republic of China, it was merged into three colleges and nine departments of Arts, science and business. The number of students has grown from 136 at the beginning to more than 300.
National Xiamen University
On July 1, 1937, at the request of Tan Kah Kee's letter, the Nanjing National Government agreed to change the private Xiamen University into a national university

On July 6, 1937, Dr. SA Bentong, a famous physicist and professor of Tsinghua University, was appointed president of Xiamen University.
On September 4, 1937, due to the Japanese invasion of Xiamen, the school moved to Gulangyu. In November, the school decided to move to Ting. On December 24, it began to move. On January 12, 1938, it arrived safely. In May, Xiamen University was bombed by Japanese invaders. During his stay in Changting, Fujian Province, teachers and students overcame many difficulties and insisted on teaching, and the scale of the school continued to expand. By the time of the victory of the Anti Japanese War, Xiamen University had set up four colleges and 15 departments of Arts, science, law and business, and the number of students had increased from more than 300 to more than 1000.
On September 19, 1945, the executive yuan of the national government appointed Dr. Wang Deyao president of national Xiamen University.
On June 1, 1946, the headquarters of Xiamen University began to move back to Xiamen. All walks of life in Changting held a farewell meeting in the stadium, presenting a plaque with four characters of "the strength of the South". After moving back to Xiamen, the judicial section of the Department of ocean, Department of international trade and Department of law was set up, with more than 1600 students.
On January 31, 1949, former President Sa Bentong died in the United States. According to his will, he buried his ashes in Xiamen University

Xiamen University
Xiamen was liberated on October 17, 1949. On October 20, Xiamen Municipal military control commission appointed military representatives Wu Qiang and Xiao Feng to take over Xiamen University and form a new Party branch of Xiamen University.
In May 1950, the Central People's government appointed economist Professor Wang Yanan as president of Xiamen University.
In 1951, the former provincial Fujian Agricultural College was merged into Xiamen University, and changed into the Agricultural College of Xiamen University (located in Fuzhou City). The three departments of politics, law and economics of the former private Fujian college were merged into Xiamen University.
In 1952, the national institutions of higher learning carried out a major adjustment. Before the adjustment of departments in 1952, Xiamen University had seven colleges.
The adjustment of departments in Xiamen University is as follows:
1: Shandong University: in 1952, the faculty and students of the Department of Oceanography of Xiamen University transferred to Shandong University to form the Department of Oceanography of Shandong University.
2: Ocean University of China: when Shanda moved to Jinan in 1958, it left the Department of Oceanography in Qingdao and later developed into Qingdao Ocean University, which was renamed Ocean University of China in 2002.
3: Zhejiang University: in 1952, the electrical engineering, civil engineering and mechanical engineering departments of Xiamen University were merged into Zhejiang University.
4: Southeast University: in 1952, the mechanical and electrical engineering departments of Xiamen University of technology and some departments of Nanjing University, Jinling University, Jiangnan University and other universities formed Nanjing Institute of technology, later Southeast University.
5: Hehai University: in 1952, Nanjing University, Jiaotong University, Zhejiang University, Tongji University, Xiamen University and other universities merged in water conservancy, and established east China University of water conservancy in Nanjing, namely Hehai University.
6: Nanjing University: in 1952, the Russian major of Xiamen University merged into the Foreign Language Department of Nanjing University, and the Russian Majors also transferred to the Foreign Language Department of the University.
7: Tsinghua University, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics: in May 1951, the Department of Aeronautics of Xiamen University, Northwest Institute of technology, and Beiyang University merged into Tsinghua University to establish the school of Aeronautics of Tsinghua University. The aviation departments of the above three universities were not directly involved in the establishment of Beihang (Beihang was established in 1952).
8: Shanghai University of Finance and Economics: in 1953, the Department of business management of Xiamen University Business School was transferred to Shanghai University of Finance and economics.
9: Tongji University: in 1952, dozens of teachers and students from Xiamen University were transferred to Tongji University.
10: Inner Mongolia University: in 1957, Inner Mongolia University was founded by more than ten famous universities in China (including Tsinghua University, Nankai University, etc.).
11: East China Normal University: in June 1924, more than 300 teachers and students of Xiamen University left for Shanghai to establish Daxia University. After liberation, it was merged into East China Normal University.
12: East China University of political science and Law: in 1952, the school of political science and Law (including the Department of politics and law) of Xiamen University was incorporated into East China University of political science and Law (now East China University of political science and law).
13: Shanghai Ocean University: in 1972, the Department of Fisheries of Xiamen University was transferred to Xiamen Fisheries College, which was relocated from Shanghai Fisheries College. In 1979, Shanghai Fisheries College was restored and Xiamen Fisheries College was continued. The college was divided into two parts, and then developed into Shanghai Ocean University and Jimei University respectively.
14: Dalian Maritime University: Dalian Maritime College (renamed as Dalian Maritime University in 1994) was formed by the merger of northeast Maritime College, Shanghai Maritime College and Fujian Maritime College in the adjustment of colleges and departments in the 1950s, and Fujian Maritime College is the specialized course of maritime affairs separated from Xiamen University.
15: Fuzhou University: in order to establish Fuda, Xiamen University supports ten teachers in physics, two-thirds in chemistry and three-quarters in mathematics.
16: Jimei University: the Department of navigation and Fisheries of Xiamen University was transferred to Jimei navigation school and Xiamen Fisheries College in the 1970s.
17: Fujian agriculture and Forestry University: the agricultural college and the Agricultural College of Fuzhou University merged to form Fujian Agricultural College.
18: Fujian Normal University: in 1954, the Education Department of the College of Arts was incorporated into Fujian Normal University.
In 1952, after the adjustment of departments, Xiamen University only retained the College of Arts and Sciences, and became a comprehensive university of Arts and Sciences. After 52 years, some departments were transferred out.
In July 1958, Xiamen University was released to Fujian Province.
In September 1963, with the approval of the central government, Xiamen University became a national key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of education.
During the "Cultural Revolution", Xiamen University was delegated to the leadership of Fujian Provincial Revolutionary Committee, and a large number of cadres and teachers were transferred to the countryside. Some of them served as middle school teachers, and some changed their careers to other jobs.
From 1966 to 1970, Xiamen University stopped recruiting students for five years.
In 1971, it began to recruit "workers, peasants and soldiers" students. At that time, there were nine departments. In addition to retaining the eight departments in 1966, the Education Department of Fujian Normal University moved back to Xiamen University.
In 1972, the Department of Fisheries of Xiamen University was transferred to Xiamen Fisheries College.
