Sanyou cave

Sanyou cave is backed by Xiling Gorge of the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River and faces Xialao river. The cave has unique scenery and beautiful scenery. Sanyudong scenic spot is located outside Xiling Gorge, about 10 kilometers away from Yichang. There are two allusions to the name of Sanyou cave. Poets Bai Juyi, Bai Xingjian and Yuan Zhen of Tang Dynasty once visited the cave together, which is called "the first three tours"; in Song Dynasty, Su Xun, Su Shi and Su Zhe's father and son also visited the cave together, which is called "the last three tours".

In the third year of Yuanhe (808 AD), Bai Juyi offended the eunuchs and powerful officials because of his upright temperament when he was appointed Zuo Shiyi (the admonitor in front of the emperor). His colleague Yuan Zhen was whipped by the eunuch Liu Shiyuan. Li chunfei, Emperor Xianzong of the Tang Dynasty, did not accuse Liu Shiyuan, but demoted Yuan Zhen to TongZhou (now Dachuan city of Sichuan Province). Bai Juyi once wrote three times to defend him. In the 10th year of Yuanhe (815 AD), he was persecuted for writing to the government and exposing the murder of the Prime Minister Wu Yuanheng in the imperial court. He was demoted to be Sima of Jiangzhou (Jiujiang, Jiangxi). In the 14th year of Yuanhe (819 AD), Bai Juyi was promoted from Sima of Jiangzhou to governor of Zhongzhou (Zhongxian, Chongqing). His brother Bai Xingjian went to work with him and met Yuanzhen in Xiling Gorge by accident（ Yuan Zhen proposed that "it's hard for us to meet each other, and it's not easy to get the scenery. Please write 20 rhymes of ancient poems and write them on the stone wall" and Bai Juyi wrote "preface" to record it. At the end of the preface, it says that "it's three tours of the cave, so it's three tours of the cave.". Sanyou cave is named after this cave, which was discovered by Bai Juyi, a poet of Tang Dynasty.

Northern Song Dynasty

In 1035, song Qingji, an erudite and virtuous scholar, was transferred to the prefecture magistrate of xiazhou. He carried out a series of folk custom reforms and the renovation of streets and city fences in Yiling county. The transformation of thatched cottages into tile roofed houses in Yichang also started from this period. In 1036, song Qingji was transferred to the prefecture magistrate of xiazhou. Song Qingji built a pavilion at Jiangjin outside the west gate of Yiling, named Zhixi. He invited Ouyang Xiu, a writer who was demoted to Yiling as county magistrate in May of this year, to write a story of xiazhou Zhixi Pavilion for the pavilion.

Huang Tingjian, a famous calligrapher in the Song Dynasty, wrote inscriptions. The pavilion was well-known by Ouyang Xiu. Later, it was listed as one of the three famous scenic spots of Yiling. Since its establishment for more than 900 years, Xiting has experienced the process of twice moving. In 1981, it was rebuilt in wangxiangtai, north peak of Xiling mountain.

Southern Song Dynasty

On October 8, the fifth year of Qiandao (1169 AD), Emperor kaozong of the Southern Song Dynasty, Lu you lived with the army. When he entered Shu, he passed Yiling and lived in Sanyou cave. When Lu you saw the inscriptions by Huang Tingjian, ou Yangxiu and other scholars, he was filled with emotion. After enjoying himself, he took the spring water from the pool to fry tea. The water was very strange and the tea was delicious. The small pool was close to the mountain and the stream. Lu You lingered and forgot to return. The title of "San you Dong Qian Yan Xia Tan Shui Qi Qu Jian Cha" was on the cliff beside the pool. From then on, this unknown spring was known as "Lu You Quan".

Counter-Japanese War

During the Anti Japanese War, Xialaoxi became a natural barrier for the Japanese army. Nanjinguan, on the South Bank of Xialaoxi, was occupied by the Japanese army, and the operational headquarters of Chen Cheng, the commander of the fifth war zone at that time, was located nearby. In October 1938, Yan Lisan, acting chairman and Minister of civil affairs of Hubei provincial government, led provincial government officials such as Zhang Nanguang and Shi Yu to move to Sanyou cave to take charge of the Anti Japanese and national salvation work of the whole province.

The karst landform of Sanyou cave is mainly manifested in the typical karst landscape in Sanyou cave. Three stalactite pillars fall from the sky, which naturally divide Sanyou cave into two chambers.

The two stalactites juxtaposed between the front room and the back room are just like the door couplets. The whole huge body of Sanyou cave is made up of many stalactite pillars, which seem to be supported by stalactite pillars. The obvious bedding structure of limestone can often be seen outside Sanyou cave.
