Taiping mountain
Taiping mountain is located in the central and western regions of Hong Kong. It refers to Taiping mountain in Hong Kong. English: Victoria Peak, which generally refers to "the top of Taiping mountain", is referred to as the top of Taiping mountain by Hong Kong people. Taiping mountain, formerly known as "hard head mountain", was called Xianglu peak in ancient times. With an altitude of 554 meters, it is the highest peak on Hong Kong Island.
geographical position
Taiping mountain has a long history and has many names. Different names refer to different areas.
Geographically and historically, Taiping mountain covers a large area of hills east of Longhu Mountain, north of pofulin and west of majixian gorge. This can be confirmed by the historical documents of Taipingshan street and the buildings on the top of the mountain in Sheung Wan. Later, the foot part of Taiping mountain was divided into central and shanghuan, which was developed into a central business district; the hillside part was called semi mountainous area, which was a noble residential area. The top of the mountain became the residence and mansion of the rich and some foreign leaders, and was developed into a tourist attraction in modern times. Therefore, Taiping mountain and the top of the mountain have almost become synonyms.
In Hong Kong, people often call the peak of Taiping mountain the peak or Taiping mountain. However, the general understanding of the mountain top range is not very correct geographically. Most people regard the peak station area of peak cable car as "peak". In fact, the peak station area is Lufeng gorge, and the real peak is located in the Peak Park.
On the map, the top of the mountain can be subdivided into Victoria Peak, Lufeng gorge, Gefu mountain, guanlongjiao and Qili mountain.
history
In the early days of the opening of the port, due to the inconvenient transportation, people had to go up and down the mountain by sedan chair, so there were not many people living on the top of the mountain at that time. In the 1880s, there were only about 40 households. Later, because of the beautiful scenery and cool temperature at the top of the mountain, it gradually attracted more foreigners to live. To meet the traffic demand, the peak cable car was opened to traffic in 1888. Then, in 1904, the Hong Kong government made a law prohibiting Chinese from living on the top of the mountain, which was abolished in 1947.
In 1867, the governor of Hong Kong, Mr. Madonna, set up a summer villa at the top of the mountain. The villa was rebuilt in 1902, but it was stopped in 1930's, and finally demolished in 1946, leaving only the guard room. The original site was turned into a peak park.
In addition, in 1873, the peak hotel was completed and put into operation, and the operator of the hotel was Alexander Finley Smith, who later proposed to build the peak cable car. However, the hotel was destroyed by fire in 1938 and has not been rebuilt since. It later became a bus terminus and was converted into a peak Plaza in December 1989.
Evolution of mountain names
It is said that during the reign of Jiaqing, when the pirate Zhang baozi occupied Hong Kong Island, he set up an east-west camp at the foot of the mountain and used the peak as a lookout tower. When he saw a merchant ship passing by on the sea, he used the flag to inform the camp at the foot of the mountain and sent out ships to intercept the robbers, so it was called Qishan.
In 1842, Hong Kong officially began to be ruled by Britain. In order to declare its sovereignty, the British people put up the British flag on the top of the mountain. This is another way of saying that "pulling the flag mountain" came from.
Later, John Gardiner Austin, who served as the assistant secretary of Hong Kong from May 7, 1868 to April 4, 1878, changed the name of the mountain to Austin. Later, it was named Victoria mountain after Queen Victoria
