Xiangtan University is located in Xiangtan City, the hometown of Comrade Mao Zedong and a famous historical and cultural city in China. It is the only University jointly built by the Ministry of education in Hunan Province and the only old comprehensive national key university without large-scale merger in Hunan Province. The first phase of the national "basic capacity building project for universities in the central and western regions" was selected as a university, and the University jointly built by Hunan Province and the State Administration of science, technology and industry for national defense It is one of the first batch of units with the right to confer master's degree in China, the "excellent" school in the undergraduate teaching evaluation of the Ministry of education, the first batch of universities in Hunan Province to recruit international students and national defense students, and the first university to recruit students in China over the years.

Comrade Mao Zedong was worried about the world all his life. He never asked about the specific matters of his hometown, but his only concern was the construction and development of Xiangtan University. On September 10, 1958, Comrade Mao Zedong wrote the name of the University in his own handwriting, and asked "we must run Xiangtan University well". After that, it was suspended for some reason. However, Comrade Mao Zedong always thought about Xiangtan University. When he returned to Hunan for the last time in October 1974, he once again instructed that Xiangtan university should be "restored and run again".

In 1974, Comrade Deng Xiaoping, the core of the second generation of central collective leadership, personally approved the restoration of Xiangtan University and positioned it as a comprehensive university of Arts, science and engineering. In 1978, the State Council designated Xiangtan University as a national comprehensive key university; in 1981, the University became one of the first batch of master's degree authorized units in China.

Comrade Jiang Zemin, the core of the third generation of central collective leadership, is concerned about the construction and development of Xiangtan University. In 1998, he personally wrote an inscription for the University: "running Xiangtan University well, making new contributions to the cultivation and cultivation of high-quality talents.". In 2005, the Ministry of education and Hunan Provincial People's government signed an agreement to jointly support the construction of Xiangtan University.

Over the years, the construction and development of Xiangtan University has also received the cordial care of many leading comrades of the Central Committee and the key support of national ministries and commissions, Hunan provincial Party committee and government. In 2001, Comrade Li Peng wrote an inscription for the University: "unity, diligence, realism, innovation, strive to run Xiangtan University well". In 2007, Comrade Hua Guofeng wrote an inscription for the University: "running a first-class university and cultivating first-class talents". In 2008, Comrade He Guoqiang wrote a letter encouraging the university to "comfort Comrade Mao Zedong with the excellent achievements of running Xiangtan University well". In 2009, Comrade Liu Yandong personally visited the university to inspect and guide the work, and clearly instructed: "the Party Central Committee and the State Council will give full support to the University in Chairman Mao's hometown!" in 2012, the university entered the first batch of 100 universities in the national "Midwest university basic capacity building project". In 2013, the Hunan Provincial People's government and the State Administration of science, technology and industry for national defense signed an agreement to jointly build Xiangtan University.
