Founded in 1960, Yunnan University of traditional Chinese medicine is the second batch of higher undergraduate colleges of traditional Chinese medicine in China. It was granted the right to confer a master's degree in 1986. In 2007, it was awarded "excellent" in the undergraduate teaching level assessment of the Ministry of education. In 2009, it was determined to be the provincial project construction doctoral awarding unit. In 2013 and 2015, the specialties of traditional Chinese medicine and traditional Chinese medicine respectively passed the certification of the Ministry of education. In 2016, it became a member of Yunnan Provincial People's government The government and the State Administration of traditional Chinese medicine jointly build a university, which passed the undergraduate teaching audit and evaluation of the Ministry of education in 2017. The school has three campuses, Chenggong, Baita and Yiliang, covering an area of more than 990 mu. There are 868000 paper books, 18000 thread bound ancient books and 49 Chinese and foreign databases. The total amount of electronic resources is 60.78tb.

As of October 2017, there are 10726 full-time students, including 9736 undergraduates and 990 postgraduates. The university has built the world's only Museum of traditional Chinese medicine and Western learning; in July 2017, Hanban approved it as "Confucius Institute Headquarters International (Western learning) traditional Chinese medicine culture promotion and research base". The Museum of traditional Chinese medicine and ethnic medicine in Yunnan Province is the national base of traditional Chinese medicine culture publicity and education and the base of popular science education in Yunnan Province; the school is the international education base of traditional Chinese medicine in Yunnan Province, the international science and technology cooperation base, and the research base of protection and industrial development of traditional Chinese medicine in Yunnan Province. It is the main member unit of Yunnan biomedicine and big health industry promotion group, the Deputy group leader unit of the key project "Yunnan biomedicine and big health industry development strategy and measures research" consulting project of Chinese Academy of engineering, the main member unit of Yunnan advantage Chinese herbal medicine standardized planting engineering research center, and the national education informatization pilot unit. Focusing on the three major scientific research clusters of ethnic medicine, South Yunnan medicine and South China medicine research, the university promotes the cooperation among school administration, school, school, local government and school enterprise, and creates four platforms of "third party detection of health care products and cosmetics, clinical evaluation research, health product research and development, and strategic operation center of intellectual property rights of traditional Chinese medicine", to make up for the shortcomings of Yunnan biomedicine and large health industry research platform. Yunnan Institute of traditional Chinese medicine industry development was jointly established with the provincial food and drug administration, and the "joint special fund of traditional Chinese medicine" was jointly established with the Provincial Department of science and technology. It is the Yunnan Traditional Chinese Medicine Policy Research Center, the Yunnan sub center of the traditional Chinese medicine data center of the Chinese Academy of traditional Chinese Medicine Sciences, and the Yunnan Traditional Chinese medicine data center. We have carried out comprehensive strategic cooperation with Yunnan energy investment group, cooperated with the people's Government of Yiliang County in the development and construction of a characteristic town of traditional Chinese medicine in Yunnan, built "Yunnan genuine Chinese medicine seedling breeding base" with Yunnan Youyang biotechnology company, and signed strategic cooperation agreements with Shanghai University of traditional Chinese medicine and local governments such as Zhaotong, Pu'er and Lijiang.

In the past five years, it has undertaken more than 1000 scientific research projects at all levels, including nearly 100 at the national level and more than 300 at the provincial and ministerial level. It has won 30 scientific research awards at or above the provincial and ministerial level. Led by Zhu Zhaoyun, an outstanding alumni, distinguished professor and master's tutor, and participated in the major project of "field investigation and research and development of natural drug resources in low latitude plateau area" by Zhao Yi and Wei Qunhui, the University systematically found out the current situation of natural drug resources in low latitude plateau area, and won the first prize of 2012 National Science and technology progress award; "Research and clinical application of Wenyang Tongluo method in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis" led by Peng Jiangyun won the first prize of Yunnan Science and Technology Progress Award in 2017.

In recent years, the year-end employment rate of graduates is higher than 97.5%. Students have won 46 national awards and 109 provincial awards in various national and Provincial Discipline competitions and professional skills competitions. In 2013, the exploration and practice of Ideological and political education of "undergraduate students' moral defense system" was carried out, and won the third Yunnan Provincial Innovation Award for propaganda and ideological and cultural work. The activity of "reading, learning and using classics" has become a brand in the scholarly and healthy cloud.

As early as 1990, the University cooperated with Spain on behalf of China and established "Catalonia Yunnan University of traditional Chinese medicine", which was recorded in the 60 year history of higher education of traditional Chinese medicine in China; In 2007, it launched and hosted the seventh "GMS traditional medicine exchange meeting", in 2015, it opened "traditional Chinese medicine education and training center" in Laos, in 2016, it established "Lancang Mekong traditional medicine college", and in 2016, it held the first Lancang Mekong traditional medicine exchange and the first international wa medicine development exchange meeting. It has held five consecutive international forums on Western learning of traditional Chinese medicine, providing useful reference for "Chinese culture going global". It has established exchanges and cooperation with more than 30 countries or regions, including the United States, Australia, France, Germany, Canada, Switzerland, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The school has become the most influential international traditional medicine education exchange and cooperation platform for South and Southeast Asia.

In the golden age, traditional Chinese medicine has ushered in a great opportunity for development with favorable timing, location and people. Traditional Chinese medicine has become a national strategy. Biomedicine and big health industry has become the first of eight key industries in Yunnan Province. The state has approved the establishment of Kunming big health industry demonstration zone and the construction of National Botanical Museum. One belt, one road, China will take the initiative to integrate into the national strategy of "one belt and one road" and "healthy China". It will serve Yunnan's economic and social development and promote the construction of distinctive high-level Chinese medicine universities around Yunnan's three strategic positions.
