Yunnan energy vocational and technical college, formerly known as Yunnan coal industry school, was established in 1978 with the approval of the then Yunnan Provincial Revolutionary Committee. It was officially enrolled in the autumn of 1980. In 1998, it was rated as "provincial and ministerial key technical secondary school". In 2000, it was renamed as "Yunnan Engineering and technical school" with the approval of the provincial education department. The college is located in Qujing City, the main coal producing area of Yunnan Province, covering an area of 150 mu, with a construction area of 53790 square meters. There are two teaching buildings, with a total of 90 classrooms; one experimental building, one internship factory, and 45 professional experimental training rooms, among which the coal mining, ventilation safety, digital measurement, PLC and other experimental training rooms are at the advanced level or unique in the province.

The college adheres to the school running direction of "based on coal, facing energy, and serving the society", mainly holding higher vocational and technical education, and carrying out secondary vocational education, adult higher education, on-the-job training and vocational skill appraisal. In the past 30 years, 25 higher vocational colleges have been established, including coal mining technology, mine ventilation and safety, mine geology, engineering survey technology, mechatronics technology, power plant and power system, power equipment and management of hydropower station, computer application technology, accounting, secretary, advertising design and production. It has formed a coal based professional system covering electric power, machinery, computer, economy, literature and management, etc. In 2007, the major of coal mining technology was selected as the key construction major of Higher Vocational Colleges in Yunnan Province by Yunnan Provincial Department of education, and the coal mine safety training base was approved as the provincial key construction training base. In 2008, the "coal mine safety training base" of the college was listed as a vocational education training base construction project supported by the central finance by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of education.
