In 1980, China established Shenzhen Special Economic Zone; in 1983, Shenzhen University was established in Shenzhen Special Economic Zone.

The school is located in Nanshan Peninsula, facing Houhai, far away from Hong Kong. It covers an area of 1.44 square kilometers.

The school adopts the college system.
