With a history of 91 years, Shanghai University of Finance and economics is now a key construction university directly under the Ministry of education and under the national "211 Project", and has entered the ranks of national high-level university construction projects. In 1997, Comrade Jiang Zemin wrote an inscription: "facing the new century, build Shanghai University of Finance and economics into a first-class socialist university.".

Shanghai University of Finance and economics was founded by Nanjing Normal University in 1917. Yang Xingfo, a famous social activist and patriotic Democrat, was the director of business. When Nanjing Normal University was expanded into the National Southeast University, in order to meet the needs of business talents training, the business department moved to Shanghai and established Shanghai Business University in 1921. This is the earliest Business University in the history of Chinese education. Guo Bingwen, a famous educator, was the president and Ma Yin, a famous economist, was the director of educational administration. After several changes, the University was established independently in August 1932 and named as national Shanghai business school. At that time, it was the only National Business University in China.

In August 1950, the school changed its name to Shanghai Institute of Finance and economics, and famous economists Sun Yefang and Yao Naifang became the president and vice president. At the beginning of the 1950s, the departments of Finance and economics of more than 20 universities including Fudan University, Jiaotong University, St. John's University, Hujiang University, Xiamen University and Soochow University were merged one after another. As a result, Shanghai University of Finance and economics became the only finance and economics university in East China, gathering Chu Fengyi, Chu Baoyi, Li binghuan, Li Hongshou, sun Huairen and Wu Cheng He is a famous professor in many fields, such as Xi, Wang Weizhong, Yang yinpu, Gong Qinghao, Xu Benyi, Zhou bodi, Zou Yiren, Xue zhongsan, Zhou Youguang, Yin Wenjing, Liu Fuao, Peng Xinwei, Hu Jichuang, Lou Erxing, etc. In March 1980, the school was under the leadership of the Ministry of finance. In September 1985, the University changed its name to Shanghai University of Finance and economics. In February 2000, the school was under the leadership of the Ministry of education.

After several generations of hard work and hard struggle, the university has become a multi-disciplinary key university with economic management as the main subject and coordinated development of economics, management, law, arts and science. Among the financial institutions in China, our university was the first to obtain the right to confer doctoral degree (the first batch in 1981), and it is also one of the first universities to set up Social Science (Economics) postdoctoral mobile station. In 1996, the university entered the national "211 Project" key construction university ranks; in 2000 and 2007, the University passed the Ministry of education undergraduate teaching excellent evaluation; in 2007, the university entered the national construction of high-level university project ranks.

At present, the university has three national key disciplines: accounting, finance, and history of economic thought. Finance is a national key (cultivation) discipline. It has four key disciplines of the Ministry of Finance and six key disciplines of Shanghai. It also has a national economic basic talent training base, a national college students' cultural quality education base, and a key research base of Humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of education accounting and finance The Institute has three national level bases, four first-class doctoral degree authorization points of theoretical economics, applied economics, business administration, management science and engineering, three postdoctoral mobile stations of theoretical economics, applied economics and business administration, and 44 second-class doctoral degree authorization points, among which 24 degree authorization points and 6 first-class master's degree authorization points are approved in the national discipline catalog There are 74 master's degree authorization points in secondary disciplines (including 55 authorized degree authorization points in the national discipline catalog), and 36 undergraduate majors.

The school has nearly 990 full-time teachers, including more than 530 professors and associate professors. By the end of 2008, there were 22214 students of all kinds, 13377 full-time students. Among them, there are about 4493 full-time doctoral and postgraduate students, 8000 undergraduates and more than 842 full-time international students.

The campus covers a total area of 498458 square meters. Among them, the main campus of Guoding road is the full-time undergraduate and graduate education base, the campus of Zhongshan North 1st road is the professional postgraduate, international student education and high-level talent on-the-job training base, and the campus of Kunshan Road is the adult education base.

The school has the school of economics, School of finance, School of accounting, School of international business administration, School of public economics and management, School of information management and engineering, School of law, School of humanities, Department of statistics, Department of Applied Mathematics, Department of foreign languages, Department of physical education, School of international cultural exchange, MBA college, School of continuing education, School of international education and other teaching units. The University also has more than 20 scientific research institutions, such as Institute of Finance and economics, Institute of accounting and finance, Institute of advanced research, etc.

The conditions for running schools are improving day by day. The school has a modern computing center, voice laboratory, audio-visual classroom, College English Autonomous Learning Center, ERP Experimental Teaching Center, simulated court, financial science laboratory, e-commerce laboratory and other six professional laboratories, with advanced network systems and multimedia classrooms. In recent years, the construction of campus network is constantly upgrading, connecting all departments and student apartments. The school library has a rich collection of 1357400 paper books and 790000 e-books. The electronic literature retrieval and inquiry system and integrated management system have been built, which basically realizes the network and automation.

The school adheres to opening to the outside world and strengthens international exchanges. At present, the university has established intercollegiate cooperation with the school of economic development of the world bank, the International Monetary Fund, the United Nations development program, and more than 30 universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, the Netherlands, Australia, Canada, Russia, Hong Kong and other countries and regions. The university has also cooperated with ACCA, CGA, CPA Australia, Loma, CII, IOA and other international authoritative professional institutions to establish the international qualification examination and assessment system for some projects Training center.

The school comprehensively promotes quality education and advocates a civilized and upward campus cultural atmosphere, which has achieved fruitful results. In 1993, it was rated as the advanced collective of the national financial system. In 2000, it was rated as the advanced unit of the national school art education. Since 1993, it has been rated as the "civilized unit" of Shanghai for seven times in 14 consecutive years.
