Southwest Forestry University started from the Forestry Department of Yunnan University in 1939, and went through Kunming College of agriculture and forestry, Yunnan College of forestry, Yunnan College of forestry and Southwest College of forestry. It was established independently in 1978. It was originally a college directly under the Ministry of forestry. After the structural adjustment of the national higher education layout in 2000, the management system was adjusted from the colleges directly under the State Forestry Administration to "jointly built by the province and ministry and managed by the province" It is the only independent Forestry University in Western China. Located in Kunming City, Yunnan Province, the campus has won the titles of "national greening model unit", "national greening advanced collective" and "provincial greening excellent university".

With forestry as the main subject and biological environment as the characteristics, the University integrates agriculture, science, engineering, arts, law, management and other disciplines and develops in a coordinated way. It mainly implements undergraduate and postgraduate education, as well as adult education, higher vocational and technical education and international student education. The university is one of the first batch of units with the right to confer master's degree after China's reform and opening up. In 2009, it was approved as a new doctor's degree conferring unit for national project construction. At present, there are 11 first-class master's degree programs, 42 second-class master's degree programs and 4 professional master's degree conferring programs. There are 7 provincial and ministerial key disciplines and 69 undergraduate majors and directions. At present, there are 1116 teaching staff, including 105 with senior professional titles, 246 with deputy senior professional titles, 234 with master's degree tutors, 18 with doctor's degree tutors, 47 with national, provincial and ministerial academic and technical leaders, discipline leaders, outstanding talents and famous teaching teachers in the new century. At present, the university has several scientific research platforms, such as national research center, Key Laboratory of the Ministry of education, Key Laboratory of the State Forestry Administration, Key Laboratory of Yunnan Province, and a number of scientific research and teaching platforms, such as key laboratories of provincial universities, engineering (Technology) research centers of universities, experimental demonstration centers of universities, demonstration laboratories of universities, and innovative talent training bases. The school is in the forefront of similar research in plateau wetland, biodiversity and nature protection, forest cultivation, forest management, forest protection, bamboo research, wood science and technology, etc.; it has obvious regional characteristics in landscape planning and design, eco-tourism and other fields; it has made outstanding achievements in bird, fish, ant and other aspects. On the basis of credit mutual recognition, we have carried out undergraduate joint education projects with the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, Thailand, Poland and other countries, as well as various forms of undergraduate and graduate short-term teaching practice and graduation thesis practice projects. We have established scientific and technological cooperation and exchange relations with international organizations such as the World Wide Fund for nature, the global environment facility, the American Association for the conservation of nature, the MacArthur Foundation and the Ford Foundation.
