Shanghai Jiaotong University

Shanghai Jiaotong University is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in China. It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of education and jointly built by the Ministry of education and Shanghai. It is also one of the first batch of construction universities in the national key construction projects of the Seventh Five Year Plan and the eighth five year plan, as well as the "211 Project" and "985 Project". After more than 100 years of unremitting efforts, Shanghai Jiaotong University has become a "comprehensive, research-oriented, international" domestic first-class and international well-known university, and is steadily moving forward to a world-class university.

At the end of the 19th century, the Sino Japanese war was defeated and the nation was in danger. Mr. Sheng Xuanhuai and a group of insightful people, adhering to the belief that "self-improvement first depends on the reserve of talents, and the reserve of talents must start school first", founded Nanyang public school, the predecessor of Jiaotong University in Shanghai. At the beginning of its establishment, the University adheres to the tenet of "seeking practical learning and doing business". With the goal of cultivating "first-class talents", it is diligent and enterprising. In the 1920s and 1930s, it has become a famous university in China, known as "MIT of the East". During the Anti Japanese War, the majority of teachers and students went through difficulties, moved to Chongqing, insisted on running the school, and many students joined the army. On the eve of liberation, the majority of teachers and students actively participated in the democratic revolution, and the school was known as the "bastion of democracy". In the early days of the founding of new China, in order to meet the needs of national economic construction, the University adjusted a number of advantageous departments and disciplines to support the development of domestic brother universities; in the mid-1950s, the University responded to the call of the national construction of the northwest, went through the changes of moving to the west, running schools in two places, and running schools independently, which made important contributions to the construction of new China's higher education system and the promotion of socialist construction Offer. 6、 In the 1970s, under the leadership of the Commission of science, technology and industry for national defense and the former Ministry of six machines, the University actively engaged in national defense research and personnel training, and made great contributions to the "two bombs and one satellite" and national defense modernization.

Since the reform and opening up, especially under the leadership of the Ministry of education, the university has been taking the lead in promoting the reform with the spirit of "being the first in the world": Taking the lead in forming a delegation of professors to visit the United States, taking the lead in implementing the reform of the school management system, taking the lead in accepting huge donations from overseas friends, etc., which has effectively promoted the reform of teaching and scientific research. In 1984, Comrade Deng Xiaoping cordially received the main leaders of the University and representatives of teachers and students, and fully affirmed the reform of Shanghai Jiaotong University. With the strong support of the state and Shanghai Municipality, the university has successively restored and built science, management, life, law and humanities with the goal of "upgrading the level and creating the first class" and discipline construction as the leader. The former Shanghai Agricultural University was merged in 1999 and the former Shanghai Second Medical University was merged in 2005. So far, the university has completed the discipline layout of the comprehensive university. In recent years, through the construction of national "211 Project" and "985 Project", high-level talents of the university are increasingly gathered, scientific research strength is rapidly improved, and the transformation to a research-oriented university has been realized. At the same time, through cooperation with the University of Michigan and other world-class universities in the United States, the university has made an important breakthrough in implementing the internationalization strategy. Minhang campus construction began in 1985. After 20 years, it has been basically built into a modern university campus with perfect facilities and beautiful environment, and completed the transfer of school running focus to Minhang campus. Through this series of reform and construction, the school's various school running indicators have increased significantly, the school has achieved leapfrog development, and its overall strength has been significantly enhanced, which has laid a solid foundation for the construction of a world-class university.

Jiaotong University always regards talent training as its fundamental task. Over the past 100 years, the university has trained more than 200000 outstanding talents for the country and society, including a group of outstanding politicians, scientists, social activists, industrialists, engineering and technical experts and medical experts, such as Jiang Zemin, Lu Dingyi, Ding Guangen, Wang Daohan, Qian Xuesen, Wu Wenjun, Zhang Guangdou, Zou Taofen, Huang Yanpei, Shao Lizi, Cai E, Wang An, Chen minzhang and Chen Mingzhang Zhu et al. Jiaotong University graduates have created many "firsts" in China's modern development history: China's earliest internal combustion engine, the earliest motor, the earliest Chinese typewriter, etc. The first 10000 ton ship, the first nuclear submarine, the first hovercraft, the first hydrofoil boat, the first generation fighter, the first carrier rocket, the first man-made satellite, the first case of heart mitral valve separation, the first case of successful orthotopic liver transplantation, the first case of successful rescue of large-area burn patients in new China all embody the cooperation of teachers, students and alumni of Jiaotong University Hard work and wisdom. Since the reform and opening up, a group of young alumni have emerged in all walks of life all over the world.

At present, the university has 21 colleges / departments (including adult education college, network education college, technical college and International Education College), 19596 full-time undergraduates, 9173 full-time postgraduates and 4629 doctoral students, 2978 full-time teachers, including 722 professors, 15 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 18 academicians of Chinese Academy of engineering, and distinguished professors and professors of "Yangtze River scholars" There are 51 professors, 46 winners of national fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and 11 chief scientists of national key basic research and development program (973 Program).

At present, the university has 22 first-class discipline doctoral programs and 143 second-class discipline doctoral programs, covering 8 disciplines such as science, engineering, medicine, management, law, economics, agriculture and arts; 41 first-class discipline master programs and 232 second-class discipline master programs, covering all 12 disciplines; 49 national key disciplines, 9 first-class discipline national key disciplines, 19 Shanghai key disciplines; and 1 National Laboratory (Preparatory), 6 national key laboratories, 1 National Defense Key Laboratory and 1 national defense key discipline laboratory, 13 departmental key laboratories, 21 Shanghai key laboratories, 4 national engineering research centers, 3 engineering research centers of the Ministry of education, 1 Shanghai Engineering Technology Center, and 2 national "863" high tech network open laboratories. At present, the university has 65 undergraduate majors, covering 36 secondary classes of eight disciplines, including economics, law, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine and management; it has three national engineering basic course teaching bases, including engineering physics, engineering mathematics and electrical engineering and electronics; two national talent training bases, including life science and integrated circuit; and the university students' cultural quality education base of the Ministry of education There are 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center and 3 Shanghai experimental teaching demonstration centers; there are 5 winners of national famous teacher award and 23 winners of Shanghai famous teacher award; there are 22 national excellent courses and 78 Shanghai excellent courses; in 2001 and 2005, as the first completion unit, they won 20 national teaching achievement awards and 97 Shanghai teaching achievement awards . From 2003 to 2006, a total of 544 undergraduate students received 48 international awards and 165 national awards.
