Shanghai University is a comprehensive university under Shanghai municipal government and under the key construction of "211 Project". The current Secretary of the Party committee is Professor Yu Xinhui and the president is Professor Luo Hongjie.

In October 1922, Shanghai University was founded with Yu Youren as its president and Qu Qiubai as its Dean. This is a revolutionary school known as "Wuyou Huangpu, Wenyou Shangda". After the "April 12" counter revolutionary incident in 1927, it was forcibly closed down by the Kuomintang authorities.

In May 1994, Shanghai University of Technology (founded in 1960), Shanghai University of science and Technology (founded in 1958), former Shanghai University (founded in 1983) and Shanghai College of science and Technology (founded in 1959) merged to form a new Shanghai University. The majority of teachers and students of Shanghai University are determined to inherit and carry forward the glorious tradition of Shanghai University in the 1920s and make greater contributions to the construction of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Professor Qian Weichang, a famous scientist, educator, outstanding social activist and senior academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, became the president of Shanghai University of technology in 1983 and continued to be the president of Shanghai University in 1994. His unique educational thought and management strategy created a new situation of ideological emancipation and academic prosperity, and promoted the new development of various undertakings of the University.

Shanghai University has a complete range of disciplines, covering philosophy, economics, law, literature, history, science, engineering, management, art and other disciplines.
