Guangxi Institute of technology is a local engineering college established with the approval of the State Council and directly under the people's Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Founded in 1958, the school stopped recruiting students in 1961 and closed down in 1962. In 1982, it merged with Guangxi Institute of light industry, Guangxi Institute of machinery and Guangxi Institute of petrochemical industry, and was rebuilt. In 1985, it moved from Nanning to Liuzhou to run a school.

The school covers an area of more than 1200 mu, with a construction area of 374000 square meters. It has 13 departments, 2 secondary colleges, 5 teaching departments, 1 independent college and 14 research institutes (centers). There are 42 undergraduate majors and 5 Master's degree authorization points. It is a multi-disciplinary university with engineering as the main body and coordinated development of science, management, arts, economics, law, education and other disciplines. It has formed a multi-level, multi type and complete talent training pattern from undergraduate education to postgraduate education, continuing education, higher vocational and technical education and international student education.

The university enrolls students from 28 provinces and cities in China, with more than 19000 full-time undergraduates and postgraduates (including about 6000 students from independent colleges), more than 12000 adult higher education students, totaling more than 30000, and has trained more than 40000 application-oriented professional and technical talents for the society.

The school has more than 1100 staff, including nearly 300 teachers with senior titles such as professor and associate professor, and nearly 60% of full-time teachers have doctor's and master's degrees. In 2000, it was approved by the Ministry of education as the national key construction of vocational education teacher training base. In 2005, after the examination of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and the Ministry of education, it was approved to grant the master's degree. The major of mechanical design and theory, control theory and control engineering, structural engineering, biochemical engineering and enterprise management became the authorized point of the master's degree. In the same year, it successfully passed the undergraduate teaching evaluation of the Ministry of education with good achievements. The annual employment rate of graduates remains above 92%, ranking in the forefront of colleges and universities in the region.

The university has vigorously implemented the strategy of "strengthening the university through science and technology" and made remarkable progress in scientific research. In recent years, the college has undertaken more than 800 scientific research projects, including more than 20 national level projects such as national "863", National Natural Science Foundation of China and National Social Science Foundation of China. It has published more than 3200 academic papers, entered the SCI, EI and ISTP search for more than 160. It has obtained nearly 20 patents and software copyrights, and obtained nearly 40 scientific research achievements above the municipal level.

The school actively implemented the "three pairs of innovation action plan" and vigorously carried out the school enterprise science and technology cooperation. In 1994, with the strong support of the Party committee and government of the autonomous region and the active advocacy of Liuzhou municipal Party committee and government, 13 large and medium-sized state-owned enterprises, including Guangxi Institute of technology, Liuzhou Iron and Steel Group Company and Liuzhou Construction Machinery Co., Ltd., jointly established the board of directors of Guangxi Institute of technology. At present, the board of directors has developed to more than 40 director units. The establishment of the board of directors has greatly strengthened the connection between the school and local governments and enterprises in personnel training, scientific research, etc., built a good platform for industry university research cooperation, and strengthened the school running characteristics of "school city integration, school enterprise cooperation".

The college's foreign exchange and cooperation are becoming more and more active. It has established long-term exchanges and cooperation with nearly 20 universities and academic education institutions in the United States, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and other countries and regions. The level of open education has been continuously improved and the social influence has been expanding.

Outstanding achievements have been made in the construction of spiritual civilization. It is the home of national model workers, the founding unit of National May 4th Red Flag Youth League Committee, the civilized unit of autonomous region level, the safe and civilized campus of autonomous region level, and the spiritual civilization unit of Liuzhou city. It was named as "garden unit" by Liuzhou Municipal People's government, and won the honorary title of "national advanced unit of College Students' social practice" 11 times.
