Founded in 1951, Hunan Institute of engineering is located in Xiangtan City, the hometown of Mao Zedong. In June 2000, with the approval of the Ministry of education, Xiangtan mechanical and electrical college and Hunan Textile College were merged and formed. Xiangtan College of mechanical and electrical engineering was founded in 1951, formerly under the Ministry of mechanical industry of the people's Republic of China, and is a key construction school of national exemplary College of engineering; Hunan Textile College was founded in 1978, formerly under the Department of textile industry of Hunan Province. The school implements the management system that the central government and Hunan Province jointly build and Hunan Province is the main management.

Since the University was upgraded, it has always adhered to the orientation of Application-oriented Education. In 2007, it successfully passed the undergraduate teaching evaluation of the Ministry of education with excellent results. In June 2010, it was approved as the first batch of universities to implement the "excellent engineer education and training plan" of the Ministry of education. In October 2011, with the approval of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, it became a pilot University of "serving the master's degree education for the special needs of the country". In 2013, the "collaborative innovation center of wind power equipment and power transformation" led by the University and jointly established by Xiangdian group and Xiangtan University was selected as the first batch of collaborative innovation centers of "2011 plan" in Hunan Province.

The school has two campuses, the main campus and the south campus, with a total area of 1.08 million square meters, a building area of 527000 square meters, 187 million yuan of teaching and scientific research equipment, and more than 1.34 million paper books. The main campus of the university is located on the Bank of the Xiangjiang River. It is a "garden type unit" and a "civilized university" in Hunan Province with beautiful scenery against the scenic belt along the river and pagoda park. At present, the university has 16 teaching colleges (departments and centers), 50 undergraduate majors and 2 master's degree programs, with 20200 full-time students enrolled in 28 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government).

The undergraduate education covers six disciplines, including engineering, management, arts, science, economics and arts. It has a group of advantageous majors, such as electrical, mechanical, textile, chemical, and management. It has formed a professional pattern of engineering oriented and multi-disciplinary coordinated development. At present, there are 5 provincial key construction disciplines, 8 "excellence program" pilot specialties of the Ministry of education, 8 national and provincial characteristic specialties, 1 national comprehensive reform pilot specialty and 2 provincial comprehensive reform pilot specialty; There are 2 national engineering practice education centers, 1 National off campus practice education base, 1 national cultural quality education base (joint), 6 provincial demonstration laboratories (centers), 8 provincial practice teaching construction projects, 9 provincial excellent practice bases, 3 provincial industry university research cooperation demonstration bases, 1 provincial key laboratory and 2 provincial University key laboratories; There are 3 provincial teaching teams, 2 provincial university science and technology innovation teams, 11 provincial excellent courses and 14 provincial university information application construction projects. The school's engineering application-oriented talents training has distinctive characteristics. 40 achievements of education and teaching reform have won the national and provincial teaching achievement awards. In particular, the reform achievements of Engineering application-oriented talents training have been widely recognized by the higher authorities and employers, and have a great influence in similar colleges and universities across the country. The university is the Deputy group leader of the National Engineering Applied Undergraduate Education Cooperation Group, the vice chairman of the special committee of Applied Undergraduate Colleges of the National Association of higher education teaching and research, and the chairman of the textbook compilation and Examination Committee of applied talents training plan for general higher education.

The University actively promotes discipline construction and scientific research. In recent years, it has obtained 242 national, provincial and ministerial level projects, including 25 National Natural Science Foundation and social science foundation projects, 2 National 863 Program sub projects, 4 small and medium-sized enterprise technology innovation fund of the Ministry of science and technology of the people's Republic of China, 349 provincial and ministerial level scientific research achievement awards, 42 academic monographs, 103 patents, and nearly 689 papers collected by SCI, EI and ISTP. The university has made great efforts to strengthen industry university research cooperation. It has signed cooperation agreements with more than 180 enterprises, 73 major projects with enterprises, 205 horizontal scientific research projects with enterprises and scientific research institutes, with scientific research funds of 146 million yuan, resulting in economic benefits of more than 400 million yuan.

As one of the earliest universities in Hunan Province to carry out international exchanges and cooperation, the university has carried out multi-channel, multi-level and multi form international exchanges and cooperation. It has carried out cooperation with Australia's TAFE, the University of Canberra, the University of South Queensland, the University of western Scotland, highland and Island University, etc., and has taken the lead in carrying out "4 + 0" cooperation mode in Colleges and universities in the province More than 200 foreign experts have come to the university to teach.
