Xinjiang Vocational University was founded by the people's Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in December 1962. After more than 40 years, the university has developed into a comprehensive ordinary university under the people's Government of the autonomous region and under the charge of the Education Department of the autonomous region, which has the enrollment qualification of higher academic education.

The school has three campuses in Urumqi. Yingbin campus is located at 1075 Beijing North Road, Bazhou Road Campus is located at 14 Bazhou Road, and Youhao campus is located at 413 Youhao South Road. The school has six colleges and three departments, including school of business, School of mechanical and electronic technology, School of computer information technology, School of foreign languages, School of media and design, School of continuing education, Department of tourism and hotel management, Department of Chinese language, Department of cooking and catering management, and department of public education (Department of Physical Education).

At present, the school has more than 7000 students with various registered degrees. In addition, the number of people receiving short-term training, continuing education and other non academic education each year reaches 4000. The school has 444 teaching staff, including 295 full-time teachers, 79 professors and associate professors, 123 lecturers (first-class internship instructors) and 5 foreign teachers.

The university has run the Journal of Xinjiang Vocational University, which is issued nationwide and has a unified international and domestic serial number, as well as financial simulation, translation simulation, electronics, home appliance maintenance, control test, material mechanics, finance, computer principle, computer assembly and maintenance, office automation, hotel management, multimedia network, tourism, cooking, gem identification and processing, automobile maintenance, etc 5 teaching laboratories and more than 10 off campus training bases.

At present, a number of strong and characteristic specialties of the University have become the focus of social attention, such as hotel management, tourism English, cooking technology and nutrition, gemstone identification and processing technology, etc., which are not only famous in the autonomous region, but also in other provinces in China. Among them, gemstone identification and processing technology specialty is listed as the key development specialty by the Ministry of education, and the specialty of cooking technology and nutrition has become the industry leader of the autonomous region. The school has signed internship and employment agreements with a number of five-star hotels and travel agencies. During the internship, hotel management students will receive a monthly living allowance of 280-400 yuan, and arrange work after graduation. The employment rate of students is 100%. There are various forms of grants, scholarships and national student loans for higher vocational students. 5% of the fresh graduates are recommended to go to the related majors. In 2007, the employment rate was 95.78%.
