Jishou University, founded in September 1958, is a provincial comprehensive university with local and ethnic characteristics in the Great Western Hunan region of Hunan, Hubei, Chongqing and Guizhou border region. It is a university located in the "10 + 3" ethnic areas of the national western development. It is the only university in Hunan Province to enter the national western development. In 1960, the universities in Hunan Province were adjusted. The name of the University was kept and changed to teachers' college. In August 1978, the University was upgraded to a provincial comprehensive university and began to recruit undergraduates in 1979. In August 2000, Jishou health school was merged into Jishou University. In October 2002, Wuling college was merged into Jishou University. In 2003, the University obtained the right to confer master's degree. In June 2006, Xiangxi people's hospital became the Affiliated Hospital of Jishou University. In 2006, the University obtained excellent results in the undergraduate teaching evaluation of the Ministry of education.
