Historical evolution

Approved by the Ministry of education of the people's Republic of China, the former Wuhan University of water resources and electric power (Yichang) and the former Hubei Three Gorges University were merged and established on June 29, 2000. The predecessor of the former Wuhan University of water resources and electric power (Yichang) is Gezhouba College of hydropower engineering, which was established in 1978. It successively belongs to the Ministry of water resources and electric power, the Ministry of energy, the Ministry of electric power industry and the State Power Corporation. In 1996, it merged with the former Wuhan University of water resources and electric power to form a new Wuhan University of water resources and electric power, which has become an important part of the "211 Project" construction university. The former Hubei Three Gorges University was formed by the merger of Yichang normal college, Yichang Medical College and Yichang Vocational University in 1996.

The school's history can be traced back to 1946. In 1978, it began to hold undergraduate education, and in 1996, it began to hold master's degree education. In 1998, it joined brother universities to train doctoral students. In 2013, it was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as the unit with the right to confer doctoral degree. The school enrolls students from 31 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government and more than 20 countries (regions). Most of the majors are enrolled in one book in 25 provinces, including Hubei, Shaanxi, Ningxia and Jilin. It has the right to confer bachelor's degree, master's degree and doctor's degree, the right to recruit undergraduates independently, the right to recommend master's degree for Outstanding Undergraduates without examination, the qualification to apply for master's degree for in-service personnel, the qualification to prepare for minority students, the qualification to recruit foreign students and Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), and the qualification to recruit students from Hong Kong without examination. In 2009, the Ministry of water resources and the people's Government of Hubei Province signed an agreement to jointly build three Gorges University. In 2011, the University was selected into the second batch of "excellent engineer education and training plan" universities of the Ministry of education. At present, the Three Gorges University has become a comprehensive university with obvious characteristics and advantages of water conservancy and electric power, strong comprehensive educational strength and certain social reputation.
