Tianjin Foreign Studies University (TFSU) is one of the eight earliest independent foreign language universities in China, with foreign language and literature as the dominant discipline, literature, economics, management, law, education, art, engineering and other disciplines coordinated development and distinctive characteristics. In 1921, Tianjin Industrial and Commercial University, one of the predecessor of the University, was established in Machang road. Later, it was renamed as Jingu University, Hebei University, etc. In 1964, under the kind care of Premier Zhou Enlai, Qinhuangdao Foreign Language College (later renamed Tianjin Foreign Language College) was established. In 1974, Tianjin Foreign Language College was reorganized from the academic strength and teachers of the former Tianjin Foreign Language College, the former Tianjin foreign language school, the former Japanese major of Tianjin Normal University, and the former foreign language and Chinese major of Hebei University. In 2010, it was renamed Tianjin Foreign Studies University with the approval of the Ministry of education.

The school has two campuses, Machang road and Binhai, with a total area of 1040.06 mu. Machangdao campus is located in the center of the city. Most of the buildings in the campus are of Western European classical style, with elegant shape and clean and quiet campus environment. It is one of the ten landmark buildings in Tianjin. Binhai campus is located in Dagang higher education ecological park of Binhai New Area, with beautiful lake and beautiful scenery. The school has 16 teaching units: Graduate School, College of advanced translation, Institute of quest for honor, College of English, College of Japanese, European Institute of language and culture, College of Asian and African languages, School of international business, School of international media, School of foreign law and politics, School of international exchange, School of continuing education, teaching department of basic courses, teaching department of Ideological and political courses, teaching center of Applied Foreign Languages and Teaching Department of physical education . Among them, the Advanced Institute of translation is a high-level translation talent reserve center, which aims to serve the high-end government translation while cultivating master's talents in simultaneous interpretation and translation. Qiusuo honorary college is a pilot project of Tianjin education system reform. It is a pilot unit to highlight the characteristics of running a school, teach students in accordance with their aptitude and cultivate international compound top-notch talents.

The university is one of the first batch of master's degree awarding units approved by the State Council. At present, the university has one doctoral talent training program (foreign language and literature discipline) serving the special needs of the country, four first-class disciplines (foreign language and literature, Chinese language and literature, theoretical economics, management science and Engineering) and 22 master's degrees Authorized two-level discipline points, four (translation, journalism and communication, international business, Chinese International Education) Master's degree authorization points. Foreign language and literature, the first level discipline of Chinese language and literature and the second level discipline of world economy and foreign philosophy are the key disciplines in Tianjin. The university has the qualification of recommending excellent undergraduate graduates to study for master's degree without examination, and also has the qualification of recruiting personnel with the same academic level to apply for master's degree and foreign students to study for master's degree.

The school has excellent teachers and more than 1000 staff, including more than 700 full-time teachers. Nearly 50% of full-time teachers have overseas study experience, and more than 90% of some majors. The school employs more than 100 foreign experts and teachers all the year round. The University attaches great importance to and actively carries out academic and cultural exchanges with foreign countries, and has established friendly cooperative relations with more than 80 universities and educational organizations in 30 countries in the world. The university has six overseas Confucius Institutes in shuntianxiang University of South Korea, Lisbon University of Portugal, Toulouse First University of France, Volgograd National Normal University of Russia, Tadeo University of Columbia and Kiev National Language University of Ukraine. It is one of the first batch of full-time teachers reserve schools of Confucius Institutes determined by the Confucius Institute headquarters / national Hanban. The university has been exploring the international cooperation mode of "3 + 1", "2 + 2" and "4 + 1", sending a large number of Chinese students to study abroad every year, and receiving students from all over the world for long-term and short-term learning of Chinese and Chinese culture. At present, there are students from 44 countries all over the world studying in school.

There are 1 municipal laboratory, 3 municipal experimental teaching demonstration centers, 14 professional laboratories, 43 language laboratories, 4 sets of international standard simultaneous interpretation lecture hall, 25 sets of international satellite TV receiving system in 11 languages and campus computer network covering two districts. The school is rich in learning resources. The two campus libraries cover an area of nearly 14000 square meters, with a collection of more than 1.2 million books and more than 1600 Chinese and foreign newspapers and magazines. In particular, 180 kinds of documents have not been collected in the National Library of China, so they are rare and of great cultural value. The university has nearly 70 kinds of Chinese and foreign databases, and the foreign English Resource Retrieval Center has become the authoritative shared resource in the field of teaching and research of related disciplines in China. The school sports facilities are perfect, with standard sports ground, football field, tennis court, basketball court, volleyball court and other sports facilities, and a comprehensive gymnasium of more than 10000 square meters.
