Jilin University, located in Changchun City, the capital of Jilin Province, is a national key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of education. It was approved by the "211 Project" of the State Education Commission in 1995 and listed as one of the national key universities of the "985 Project" in 2001.

Jilin University was established on June 12, 2000 by the merger of Jilin University, Jilin University of technology, Bethune Medical University, Changchun University of science and technology and Changchun University of Posts and telecommunications. On August 29, 2004, the former Chinese people's Liberation Army Quartermaster University was merged into Jilin University. The six schools before the merger have a glorious history. The predecessor of the former Jilin University is the Northeast Administrative College, which was founded in 1946. In 1950, it was renamed northeast Renmin University. The predecessor of the former Bethune Medical University is the Bethune Medical School of Shanxi Chahar Hebei military region and the 18th army medical school, which was founded in 1939. In 1948, it was co organized with the Medical College of Northern University as North China Medical University. In 1951, it was named the First Military Medical University of the Chinese people's Liberation Army. In 1959, it was renamed Jilin Medical University. In 1978, it was renamed Bethune Medical University. The predecessor of the former Changchun University of science and technology is Changchun College of geology, which was founded in 1951. In 1952, Northeast College of geology was established when the departments were adjusted. The former Changchun University of Posts and telecommunications is the only information and Communication Engineering College in Northeast China.
