The Third Military Medical University of the Chinese people's Liberation Army is located in Chongqing Municipality. These military medical universities, which have a glorious history of more than 70 years and distinctive military characteristics, are the first batch of national key universities and the overall key construction colleges of the "2110 project" of the armed forces after the founding of new China.

The school was formed in 1954 by the merger of the former sixth and seventh medical universities. The predecessor of the sixth Medical University is the fourth field army medical school and Nanchang Medical College (former national Zhongzheng Medical College); the predecessor of the seventh Medical University is Taiyue military health school (later developed into the Second Field Army Medical University). The University was named the seventh Military Medical University after its incorporation. It moved to Shanghai in 1969 and Chongqing in 1975. The Military Commission named it the Third Military Medical University.

The school has three affiliated hospitals: the First Affiliated Hospital (Southwest Hospital), the Second Affiliated Hospital (Xinqiao Hospital) and the Third Affiliated Hospital Field Surgery Research Institute（ Daping Hospital covers an area of 205.63 hectares (3084.43 mu), with a construction area of 1.5513 million square meters, a total value of 1.832 billion yuan of equipment, a library collection of 620000 books and more than 20000 kinds of Chinese and English electronic journals.

At present, the university has 14 undergraduate majors, including clinical medicine, preventive medicine, medical examination, medical imaging, pathological diagnosis, nuclear medicine, plateau medicine, biomedical engineering, medical experimental technology, nursing, pharmacy, nutrition and food hygiene, biotechnology, computer application, and recruits medical and related professionals at three levels, including doctor, master, and undergraduate. There are 17 state-level key disciplines, 1 State Key Laboratory, 5 mobile stations for postdoctoral research, 5 first-class disciplines authorized by doctoral degree, 59 doctoral programs and 71 master programs. At present, there are more than 800 senior professional and technical positions, including 188 doctoral supervisors, 365 master supervisors, 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of engineering, 7 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding national contributions, 10 winners of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 11 national candidates for the "New Century Talents Project", 3 distinguished professors of "Yangtze scholars", and 199 State Council government subsidies. It has won more than 1500 scientific and technological achievements marked by six first prizes of national scientific and technological progress. Over the years, the university has won the National Natural Science Foundation general projects and funds, the number of national science and technology awards, the number of international and domestic papers and other major indicators reflecting the level of university running, ranking among the top 20 universities in China. The university has a wide range of international academic exchanges and cooperation. It has sent more than 2900 teachers abroad for further study, lectures and visits. It has established intercollegiate exchanges and cooperation relations with more than 50 universities in 22 countries and regions, and has hosted (undertaken) more than 10 large-scale international academic conferences.

Over the years, the comprehensive level of the school has ranked in the forefront of medical colleges in China, and has trained and delivered more than 50000 health technical cadres for the army. The students actively participate in scientific research activities and publish more than 100 papers every year. They have won 144 prizes in various national and military competitions, including 13 national special awards and 38 first prizes. They have won the "Challenge Cup" National College Students' extracurricular academic and technological works competition and won the winning cup one after another. They have been the first in Chongqing universities for three consecutive years in the National College Students' English competition The one-time pass rate of CET-2 is more than 90%, and the first pass rate of CET-4 is always more than 80%, which is higher than the average level of national key universities. Eight year medical education was launched in 2004.

The three affiliated hospitals of the university are all "class III class a" hospitals, with more than 5800 beds. They have the first-class diagnosis and treatment technology level in China, and a series of new technologies and new businesses, such as large area burn treatment, gene diagnosis, interventional therapy, large organ and multiple organ transplantation, have reached the international or domestic advanced level.

In the course of running a school for half a century, the school has closely focused on the overall situation of the country and the army, adhered to the idea of "winning with quality and characteristics", implemented the strategy of "cohesion and connotation development", implemented the development idea of "one main line and four key points", vigorously developed military medicine, and built a high-tech war oriented teaching system, including burn surgery, medical science, medical science, medical science, and so on The discipline system of military medicine, including preventive medicine, field surgery, field internal medicine, military preventive medicine, plateau military medicine and new concept weapon prevention and control, has formed the military medical characteristics and unique school running style focusing on war trauma. It has developed into a war trauma medical center of our country and army, and is one of the main forces of our military medical shield. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the school, Comrade Jiang Zemin personally wrote an inscription for the school: "striving for the cultivation of cross century military medical talents"; in May 2006, vice chairman Guo Boxiong of the Military Commission visited the school in person, praising the school as "full of talents, fruitful achievements, distinctive characteristics and strong team".
