Founded in 1950, Wuhan shipbuilding vocational and technical college is a full-time University jointly built by the central and local governments and managed by the people's Government of Hubei Province.

With the orientation of "based on ships, serving military industry and facing the society" and the policy of "people-oriented, quality-oriented and characteristic excellence", the college has trained more than 40000 talents at all levels for national industrialization and national defense modernization for more than half a century. The college enrolls students from all over the country and has 12000 full-time students.

The college is located in the central city of Wuhan, which is known as the "thoroughfare of nine provinces", with Moon Lake in the South and Han River in the north. The college is built around the lake with a modern style. It is an ideal place for students to pursue further study.

The college has a high quality and reasonable structure of double qualified teachers. At present, there are 538 full-time teachers, including 158 with the title of deputy senior high or above, 7 middle-aged and young experts who have won the special allowance from the State Council and made outstanding contributions in Hubei Province, 4 experts from the Higher Vocational Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of education, and 2 experts from the higher vocational evaluation committee of the Ministry of education.

The college has mechanical engineering department, power engineering department, ship engineering department, electronic and electrical engineering department, economic management department, public course department and training center, engineering training center, vocational skill appraisal center, Higher Vocational Education Institute, continuing education college and international cultural exchange college. There are 35 Higher Vocational Specialties, including 1 national excellent specialty construction project, 2 teaching reform pilot specialties of the Ministry of education, 5 key construction specialties of national demonstration colleges, 1 scientific research advantage and characteristic field of colleges and universities in Hubei Province, 6 military engineering specialties supported by science, technology and Industry Commission for national defense, and 6 key construction specialties of Higher Vocational Colleges in Hubei Province.

The college has eight engineering training centers, including ship center, modern manufacturing center, electrical automation center, computer information network center and business center. It has 68 training rooms with advanced facilities and perfect functions, including shipbuilding, engine room simulation, numerical control processing, PLC and automatic control, computer network technology, hotel services, etc. Among them, the Ministry of Finance focuses on the construction of six training rooms. The college also has a production practice factory of medium-sized enterprise scale. It is a national designated production unit of marine diesel engine supporting products and an exclusive manufacturer recognized by American Petroleum Institute (API).

For more than half a century, the people of Chuanyuan have been struggling and pioneering like a song. In the new era, the people of the shipyard have been living in this hot land where Zhang Zhidong, a figure of the Westernization Movement, dreams of "rejuvenating the country through industry", Xu Jianyin, a famous shipbuilding expert and weapon expert in modern times, Zhu Yi, the founder of the New Fourth Army military industry, and Wu Yunduo, a weapon expert in China, have been fighting and living.
