Dalian Maritime University (formerly Dalian Maritime College) is a national key university under the Ministry of transport. It is a famous maritime university in China. It is one of the few Maritime Universities with "international reputation" recognized by the international maritime organization.

Dalian Maritime University has a long history. Its predecessor can be traced back to the shipping department of Shanghai higher industry school (Nanyang University) of Ministry of post and communication in late Qing Dynasty in 1909. In 1911, based on the Department of shipping administration, Shanghai higher merchant shipping school was founded. In 1912, it was renamed Wusong merchant shipping school. In 1929, after the suspension, the school officially resumed and was named Wusong Merchant Shipping College of the Ministry of communications. In 1950, the Ministry of communications of the Central People's government decided to formally merge Wusong Merchant Shipping College of the Ministry of communications with the Department of shipping management of Jiaotong University to establish Shanghai Shipping College. Before liberation, China's higher maritime education experienced hardships and was interrupted several times. After liberation, higher maritime education developed rapidly. In 1953, Dalian Maritime College was established by the merger of Shanghai Maritime College, northeast Maritime College (formerly known as national Liaohai Merchant Shipping College, evolved from northeast maritime college founded by northeast maritime police department in 1927) and Fujian Maritime College (founded in 1952, which has a deep historical origin with Jimei college founded by patriotic overseas Chinese Mr. Chen Jiageng) Maritime Academy. In 1960, Dalian Maritime University was designated as a national key university; in 1983, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) set up the Asia Pacific International Maritime Training Center in the University; in 1985, the world maritime university set up a branch in the University; in 1994, with the approval of the State Education Commission, the University changed its name to Dalian Maritime University, and Comrade Jiang Zemin personally wrote the name of the University; In 1997, it was approved by the state to carry out the key construction of "211 Project"; in 1998, the school's quality management system passed the certification of the State Administration of Port Supervision and DNV, becoming the first university in China to obtain ISO9001 quality management system certification certificate and DNV three certification rules certificate; In 2004, the university successfully passed the evaluation and inspection of the undergraduate teaching level by the expert group of the Ministry of education, and obtained excellent results; in 2006, the Ministry of communications, the Ministry of education, Liaoning Province and Dalian City reached a co construction agreement on supporting the acceleration of the construction and development of Dalian Maritime University and further improving the comprehensive strength and school running level of the University. Through continuous construction and development, the university has been in the forefront of similar universities in the world in terms of scale and level.

The achievements and reputation of Dalian Maritime University at home and abroad have been fully affirmed and highly appraised by the central leadership. In 1993, party and state leaders such as Jiang Zemin, Wen Jiabao, Zeng Qinghong and Li Lanqing successively inspected Dalian Maritime University. Comrade Jiang Zemin personally inscribed "firm, rigorous, diligent, pioneering, building the world's first-class Maritime University!" in 2009, the university successfully held the commemorative activity of "China's Higher Maritime Education and the 100th anniversary of Dalian Maritime University". Dalian Maritime University is located in the southwest of Dalian, a famous coastal city in northern China.
