In order to train talents for China's modernization drive and promote cultural and academic exchanges between the mainland and Macao, with the approval of the Ministry of education of the people's Republic of China, the university continues to recruit students for bachelor's degree courses in mainland provinces and autonomous regions. The University of Australia has been recruiting students in the mainland for 26 years. At present, more than 1000 students from the mainland are enrolled in our doctoral, master's and bachelor's degree programs.

The University of Macao was founded in 1981, formerly known as the private East Asian University. After 30 years of development, it is the largest university in Macao. There are school of business administration, School of education, School of Social Sciences and humanities, School of law, School of science and technology, Chinese Academy of medicine and honorary college, offering about 100 degree courses such as bachelor's degree, master's degree and doctor's degree. 2009 is a major milestone since the founding of the University. The central government has reserved about one square kilometer of land on Hengqin island for Macao for the construction of the new campus of the University of Macau. The decision on Authorizing the Macao Special Administrative Region to exercise jurisdiction over the new campus of the University of Macau on Hengqin Island, adopted by the ninth meeting of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, reflects the support and affirmation of the central government and the SAR government for the University of Macau. In the new campus, the university will have more space to practice the University's teaching philosophy. At that time, the number of colleges will be increased to about eight, and the residential college system will be implemented to practice the whole person education. The new campus will also have three open scientific research bases to promote exchanges and cooperation between the University of Macao and other universities in Macao, Guangdong and other universities in China, jointly develop new technologies, and promote the development of innovative science and technology industries in Macao and even in the country. The new campus will not only become a new landmark of Macao, but also a new cradle for students' growth and scientific development.
