Founded in 2003, Inner Mongolia Institute of mechanical and electrical technology is a public full-time ordinary university approved by the people's Government of the autonomous region and registered by the Ministry of education of the people's Republic of China, which is directly under the Education Department of the autonomous region. The college is one of the country's 100 backbone vocational colleges. The college covers an area of 830 mu, with a construction area of 297000 square meters.

The major of mechanical manufacturing and automation has been approved by the Ministry of education as the first batch of demonstration majors of national vocational education. 15 majors, such as electrical automation technology, water conservancy and hydropower construction engineering, have been rated as brand majors of the autonomous region. Four majors, such as power plant thermal power plant, are the key construction majors supported by the Ministry of education and the Ministry of finance.
