Perennial twining herbs, 3-8 m long. The root of the tuber is large, with a diameter of 10-20 cm. The cross section is red. Stem green to lilac green, smooth glabrous, with purple spots. Leaves alternate, broadly ovate, forming oval triangle, 4-10 cm in length and 3-6 cm in width, apex pointed, base truncated to shallowly cordate, both sides nearly glabrous, with or without purple stripes on them; leaf sheath with stem texture, petiole 2-4 cm in length. Flowers small, white; racemes axillary, salty terminal. Achene ovate, enclosed in persistent perianth, 3-ribbed.
It grows on hillside, gully and sunny bush. It is distributed in Yunnan and other places. It is also cultivated.

It is astringent and cool.
[function indications] convergence, dysentery, anti-inflammatory. For dysentery, dyspepsia, internal bleeding, sores.
[usage and dosage] oral administration: decoction, 2-3 yuan; or grinding powder. External use: tamping.
