[plant morphology] parsley
Annual herb, 0.5-1 m high. The stem is erect, much branched, with shallow longitudinal groove on the surface. The leaves are alternate, with long stalks. The base is sheath like, half embracing the stem. The leaves have 3-4 pinnate divisions, and the lobes are linear. The flowers are small and white. Achene long ovate, black yellow, crushed after a strong smell.
It is cultivated in Xinjiang.

[pharmacological action] Herba ferulae has bactericidal and fungicidal effects on oral and laryngeal mucosa, as well as antiseptic and local anesthetic effects on caries cavity. Its toxicity is similar to phenol, but its local effect is not as strong as phenol. If the dosage is too large, the patient may have abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, central excitation after absorption, but few convulsions.
The oil of Fructus ferulae contains 30% phenol, which can poison earthworm. The higher concentration of alcohol extract (10%) had inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus and Escherichia coli. After dilution, it was used as expectorant for respiratory diseases.
