The body is stout, cylindric, flat in front and gradually flattened after entering. Body length about 40 cm. Head short, flat, back wide, slightly convex on both sides, inclined to the abdomen. The kiss is wide and short. The eye is large and covered with a thick lipid membrane. The distance between eyes is wide and flat. There are 2 nostrils on each side. The anterior nostril is small, round, and the posterior nostril is large, triangular. Small mouth, lower position, slightly herringbone. The mouth and lips are well developed, and there is a bulge in the front of the mandible, which can be embedded in the relative depression of the maxilla. There are villous teeth on the margin of mandible and maxilla. The gill hole is large, and the gill rake is fine and dense. The scales are large and round. Except for the snout, all of them are covered with scales. There are pointed petal scales on both sides of the base of the first dorsal fin and the axillary part of the pectoral fin. There is a triangular petal scale between the abdominal fins. The lateral line is not obvious. The longitudinal scales on the body side are 42-43. Dorsal fin IV, I 8, starting from the middle of the distance from the rostrum to the base of caudal fin; the upper margin of the second dorsal fin is slightly concave. The gluteal fin Ⅲ 8 is isomorphic to the second dorsal fin and starts slightly in front of or opposite to the second dorsal fin. Pectoral fins short and wide, 16-17, high. Ventral fin 15. The caudal fin is large, forked and deeply incised. The head and back are bluish black, and the abdomen is white. There are seven black longitudinal stripes in the upper part of the body, and there are silver white spots between them. Each fin is light gray.
It inhabits in shallow sea or estuary where fresh and salty water meet; sometimes it goes up to fresh water rivers. It feeds on the organic matter in the soil. The spawning period is from March to April. The eggs are laid in the estuary of the sea. It is widely distributed in China from Liaoning to the coast of Guangdong.
